Default 19A insurance recommendations for Ontario

My current insurance company agreed to insure my 1978 911 conversion until I was able to get my appraisal done. Unfortunately, they do not provide 19A coverage and they suggested I look for a company that does.

I now have my certified appraisal and am looking for an insurance company other than Lant (too many stupid restrictions on actually driving the car with Silver Wheels) that will cover a P-car with a 19A clause. Any recommendations? Who are you with and do they provide 19A coverage? Thanks.

State Farm, and yes, they provide 19A. There are mileage restrictions though...I believe mine is 12K per year.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is 19A?

19a = No depreciation.

The insurance co pays out an agreed value for your car if it is written off. Hence the appraisal beforehand.

The broker called me back today to tell me they would only insure it if I took the insurance for the entire year at a price of $1,450.00. But, I would also have to get Boomerang on the car before they insured it. This sounds totally outrageous to me.

Do any of you with a 19A policy get this half full and half fire and theft insurance? If so, can you tell me who your broker is. Also, if you wouldn't mind disclosing cost and conditions like KM's/year, that would also be helpful.

Thanks,

Hmm, I have no problem with dropping coverage to fire and theft throughout the winter, once it's parked (this weekend). All I do is email the broker. No boomerang or anything else - that's ridiculous. My policy has a 5000 km/year restriction (though nobody's ever checked or even hinted at it), 1 mil liability, 0 ded property damage, 500 ded comprehensive and collision, agreed value of $13,200. Total premium for full coverage for one year is $1349 but that gets broken into monthly payments then changed when I drop liability coverage in the winter. Last year it was something like $15/month.

The problem right now is the appraisal was done several years ago, before early 911 values went through the roof. I have to get it reappraised, because it's worth a lot more than that now. I requested a PCA valuation and their estimates are over $20K for a car in mine's condition. There's no way in hell I could replace that car right now for $13K. Having the 19A clause might actually be hurting me.

PM me your email address and I'll pass it on to my broker and ask her to get in touch with you. They're in London.

I just had my 993 appraised by Bruce Farrow. He is well known in the PCA community and a member of The Professional Association of Vehicle Evaluators (P.A.V.E.) which I guess is important for insurance companies. I'm covered by RBC and I made sure they honored the 19A clause. If not I would have taken my business where it would be covered and that meant the rest of my cars and home. My TT is covered by silver wheels, but this hinges on how much you drive it. I can flip you a PM with my broker’s info if you like.

I'm with TD (Primmum Insurance) I have 19A coverage. I have it parked right now with just comprehensive. My premium is $1350/yr full coverage with a $5000 deductible. I have taken the car off and on several times during the year due to not being able to drive and they never gave me a hard time about it and no restrictions other than not driving the car as a transportion to work daily. I have an apraisal of $90k. Being on the road only about 5 months it ends up costing about $800/yr.... $25/month during storage.

Here's their number, and great service. 416-233-2879 or 1-866-454-8910

by the way your car looks awesome

I just got an email from my broker saying Dominion doesn't offer 19A, so my new policy is useless. But here's the kicker. She said it turns out all along I only had the 19, not 19A with Economical, so I've never been fully covered!!!! Needless to say I was livid when I read that. So I'll take back my recommendations, and sorry to all I put in touch with her to find the 19A. I'll give her one more chance to get me the right policy and if she doesn't, I'll be looking for a new broker.

I got a good quote from TD and was required to send them my appraisal and a copy of my Form 1 (my car came from the U.S.). They will not officially approve me until they have reviewed those documents. I will keep you posted.

Hmm... TD will issue a 19A but they won't insure a 1972 because of its age. Lovely.
