Tie Rod End Puller?
#2
You should use the puller if you wish to be kind to both your original tie rod ends and your steering knuckes (ie. spindle/upright). You can remove the tie rod ends without press tool, but it's somewhat of a brutal procedure depending on the tools used.
If you take it to a reputable shop, they'll have a proper set of tools to do the job quickly, without damage to your old/new parts. They will also be able to set your toe correctly before you drive around and scrub up your front tires. A backyard job may require the used of improvised tools, and you might end up with some damaged/marred bits. Then you'll still need an alignment/toe adjustment.
Good luck with the swap!

"Yes" and "No"
I have replaced the tierods and NO you don't need a tie rod puller. Loosen the tie rod nut but don't remove. Pull down on the tie rod and give the steering knuckle a firm rap with a hammer. This should loosen the tappered shaft of the tierod end. Remove nut and allow to to hang....unscrew the tierod and repeat for other side.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I finally did some searching & it seems like a doable job. Wayne's 101 covers it too. I am ordering parts to be delivered in Denver while I'm there for business to save shipping & the usual border $s.
Maybe I can finally centre my steering wheel.

Hey Ian,
I didn't need a tool to remove my tie-rods, but I did need a SST (funky socket) to remove the ball joints.
I'll drop by and show you what I mean if you want.

Thanks Rod. I might take you up on that once I get the parts - and some time to do it. I'm traveling heavily the next 3 weeks . . .
