Default Princess Auto - Cheap Prices On All Tools and Hardware

My nissan buddies just introduced me to Princess Auto and their prices are really awsome!

Case in point, i needed some stuff for the house garage and it makes no sense shipping from harbor freight because shipping from the US is sodomy without lube and snapon pricing is the same.

Turns out that Princess auto had what is pretty much the identical engine stand for even less than harbor frieght..in canadian dollars...no shipping. Harbor wanted 54$US...picked it up locally (well mississauga) for 39.99$cdn.

Not affiliated with them in any way other than a satisfied used of their stuff and since there's a lot of DIY guys here, i figured it might be worth posting up.

NOTE: stay away from their sockets...they're not that great. That's the only poorly made piece of gear i've picked up off them so far. If i run into any other stuff i'll be sure to post a note about them.

I bought the Princess impact socket set. It seems ok.

We bought a few 10ton jack stands for work. They're ok too.

The only Snap-On tool I have is a torque wrench. I buy the Mastercraft or Craftsman hand tools when they go on sale.

Their stuff is good as long as you don't put it through too much stress. I broke the vice I got from there in half in the first month. Got a replacement from Sears.

Just be careful what you buy. Some stuff is fine and the others are cheap junk. Sometimes it's hard to tell. If you buy something then use it right away to see if it'll stand up to what you want to use it for. They have a great return policy in the first 90 days.

Cheers,

Jeez - I thought everyone knew about Princess Auto - but I guess not everyone grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan. They used to have WWII jeeps, 6wheel drive trucks, etc. in their catalog.
Their sandblast cabinets are OK, although they have a limited selection of media.
I find most of their wrenches are junk - thick clunky stuff.
They sell a neat engine stand that incorporates a hoist.
Best of all it is a place you can buy all the stuff farmers use for electric fences to contain livestock - makes for an effective and harmless way to repel persistent racoons.

Just be careful what you buy. My buddy has a thing for the place due to the low low prices, but wow, some of it is scary...I was using his torque wrench, what a piece of...I wouldn't trust it. Seems a quick way to destroy good parts.

I have shopped at P/A for years. Some of the tools are questionable quality but if you break/deform/fubar them they take them back, no questions asked. I have returned tools 17 months after purchase with no problem. If I made my living with tools I would go Snap On but just playing with my cars I do just fine with P/A. For the record I own a Snap On Triple Square socket for the CV joints. Any other companies can't take the strain.

I bought an aluminium jack from them 3 months ago (the old one was ready for retirement). I beleive it's a 2.5 ton unit. So far has been working fine. the only real downer for me was that the lifting plate in non removable.

I usualy only buy tools from them if they only get occational use as I don't think they are top quality.
Most of the stuff is fine for personal use.

Thats the small one they sell, it's small enough to fit in the spare tire well of most cars, good to take to the track to just change tires. IMO, if space is not an issue I would get the 2.5 ton as a minimum.

A buddy of mine has the 1.5 ton and no complaints. I have the 2.5 ton aluminum jack (my second one). My first one blew out the seals when I tried to jack up the side of my wife's 3500lb Volvo wagon. Princess replaced it with no question.

the 1.5 ton has a single wheel on the front..I think this style is more stable. I am considering the 2.5 ton but the smaller one is probably better for me.
