Default OT: Daughter's car...training wheels for a p-car someday.

At Clive's request, here a few pics of my daughter's car. It's a 1982 VW Golf Cabriolet. Was originally bought new by my brother's when he was a student in LA and extensively modified to Euro Gti specs of the day and then some! I've owned it since 1985; never winter driven and hasn't been really out of the garage since 1998.
Here's what was done to is:

ENGINE MODS:
• 1.7 l bored out to 1.9l
• European Gti cylinder head, pistons, cam (with adjustable cam gear), fuel metering system
• European Gti exhaust manifold with twin downpipes
• Gruppe B Gillet powersound exhaust system; no cat (not required for an 1982 VW)
• Air to Oil cooler with stainless steel braided lines
• Neuspeed throttle body
• Lightened flywheel with Sachs sports clutch
• All engine parts were: magnafluxed, balanced, ported and polished, and shot peened.
• All work performed by Porsche specialist TRE Automotive in N. Hollywood CA.

SUSPENSION:
• Tokico gas charged shocks
• Eibach progressive springs
• Upper and lower APS/Neuspeed front stress bars
• Front and rear sway-bars (Neuspeed)
• 15” BBS alloy wheels and Continental SportContact tires 205/50VR15

BODY:
• BBS front spoiler
• Euro Gti black wheel flares
• Hella grille with driving lights
• Hella foglights below the bumpers
• Rear single Hella fog lamp
• Black rubber trunk lip spoiler
• Black European bumpers (lighter)

A few other things that've I've probably forgotten, but it's still a fun little car to flog. Only 110,000Kms on the chassis (all original paint) and about 45,000Kms on the engine. I just dropped a couple of grand getting it roadworthy again (seals, fluids, AC blower, assorted electrical gremlins, etc..) but she's good to go now.
Not a Porsche, but a great way for her to learn how to drive and maintain a performance car.

Whhhhhhat! Sweet car! I'm a huge fan of Golf GTI's, in particular the old ones. What a sweet ride, I'd love that thing, hopefully your daughter knows that "old car" of hers is highly looked upon by VW fans.

Man, if I had extra $ lying around I'd buy that for sure. What do you think it's worth? Because to the trained eye-quite a bit but a lot of people will just see "1982" and base their price/offer off of that.

p.s. it's me - my Dad's son talking,

it was for sale 6 years ago on ebay, but I got fed up of the tire kickers trying to lowball it to book value. That's when I decided to keep it and pass it down to my daughters and teach them respect for quality cars. How much is it worth? I don't really know, but considering more than $8000 USD was spent on mods in 1985!...it probably has more emotional value to me than it's actually worth.

Clive,
She'll bring it around to a GTG next month after she's done school.

Cool car. A cab + summer = perfection for her.

Time to revive this thread. As some of you already know, my daughter had an accident with the car back in February. She was shaken up, but not injured at all. However, the car sustained some severe damage to the unibody. After looking at a number of options we decided to do a transplant. If you want to know more , read up on the progress to date in my blog: http://pongobaz.blogspot.com/ It's pretty long and you need to go back to February 5 to see the accident.

Enjoyed your pics, and your blog for context. I especially liked the way
she wanted to drive the Infinity - the same model that hit her . She's daddy's girl, for sure!

Nice share.

Read the whole blip, sounds like a bunch of fun and you'll end up with quite the little go-fast Golf! What's next on the Agenda for it?

Never saw this thread the first time around. Prepped by TRE - nice! You water-cooled guys might not be familiar with TRE, but they're THE guys for early 911 mods, or just work in general, in California. Do a search on Pelican for Black Beauty (and Black Beauty 2).

Brad,
next on the agenda is electronics: stereo and alarm. I just updated the blog with that story. Work is progressing much faster now, so I'll probably be visiting the car every couple of days and posting pics.

Phil,

Glad to hear that your daughter is ok.

Sheesh having young adults in the family driving can give you nightmares. One of my boys got whacked in the Escape pretty good (he's ok) and a good friend's son fell asleep on the way home from Western about a week ago, rolled and totalled the Sequoia (very lucky! no major injuries) ... so when they're late and you're wondering what's going on, it's no fun getting the call from emergency services

Have fun with the rebuild

Cheers

Hey Phil, that looks like a totally fun project. It's obvious that the guys at Bero wanted to do this project badly based on the price they offered you. I am like that as well. Willing to give my time for something that is FUN! Can't wait to read more.

Justin,
Andre and the rest of the guys at Bero are really terrific to work with plus he's a Porsche guy too. I'm stopping in tomorrow to see the progress.
