I dont quite understand, you say "that's how it works" but how do they enforce it?

In Italy the gas pumps are right on the curb in Rome, so the filler must be on the right side to get gas.

I live in Ontario and I was not aware of this. It jsut so happens my cars all have the gas on the drivers side so this is what I do , but if I have rentals I park with the passenger side on the pump side if that is where the gas is ..
