Default Importing from US

Hey guys. I've read the posts and done the searches. I think I have a pretty good handle on the procedure.

However, after the car gets across the border - what happens? My guy mentions a form or sch. 2 that can take two weeks to obtain before you can register the car? Anyone heard of this? Any thoughts?

Many TIA. Jamie.

After you clear customs, it depends if your car has 15+ years or not. If it doesn't, you'll have to pay the RIV fees as mentioned before. 2-3 weeks after, you'll get a form with a list of things to be done. At that time, you will have 45 days to complete them (you can ask for more time, they are very flexible). Once you are set, you go to any Canadian Tire for a FREE inspection. CT will stamp the form and you just have to fax it back to RIV. 4-5 weeks after, you'll have the Okay to register the car in your province.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. Can you drive the car while all that stuff is pending?

Well... I imported mine 3 months ago, got back all the papers... but haven't gotten around to register it yet. Cops don't seem to mind as they know nothing of the RIV. I was stopped once (speeding) and I told the cop I was waiting for RIV papers (he probably didn't know anything about it) and let me go.

I've been driving all around quebec-ontario in Cali plates all summer so I'll be registering it only in april 2006 . Hey, the government is lending me 2k at 0%... might as well enjoy!

It's insured fully by my insrance company. They just need VIN #, year, what use I make of it, etc. Should I be worried about my out of country license plate?

After the federal inspection, when you have the Canadian Tire stamp, you can licence it right away. You need to bring the stamp form.

Very easy.
