Default Import Boxster from U.S.

Have any of you imported a U.S. Boxster into Canada? If so, what modifications were required (e.g. gauges, daytime running lights, etc.)?

Thanks.

Gauge face will show in MPH, but you can change the digital display to KPH. Day time running lights are easy to do, its a relay installation,,,,,But duties will kill you , it has to be a great deal in order for it to be worth your wild

What is the charge for duty, does it vary according to year of car or is it a fixed percentage of purchase?

Duty is 6.1 percent on German cars. Canadian dealers tell me that at re-sale time US cars will be worth less.

Sounds a little self serving.

My previous 911 was a 1984. It was a Florida car that I bought privately in Toronto. I owned it for 5 years and sold it privately for $2,000 more than I paid for it. The buyer didn't have the slightest concern about it being an American car. I didn't either when I bought it. I would have been concerned about a European car that had been brought over.

Current Canadian and US cars are virtually identical with the exception of daytime running lights and imperial vs. metric speedo's. What would be the logic behind someone caring whether a car had been imported from the US?

6.1% duty + GST & PST and $150 fee to register with the R.I.V (registrar of imported vehicles) and $100 environmental charge for A/C. Plus the province saftey inspection

Went on porsche.com and did some price comparisons. 2003 BoxsterS $43000 US, converted to CDN(using 1.22) is $52460, duties of 6.1%($3200), grand total of $55660, plus tax plus various fees. This is still well below any equivalent model listed at dealer or autotrader in Canada.

That's for sure... I thought it would be easier to sell my 944! I guess it's not anyone that's running around looking for a 17 year old porsche!

Andre may - keep in mind that you would have to pay US state taxes before converting to can$ then adding duty, PST, GST.

I've never had to pay tax in the US when buying a used car. Maybe different if buying from a dealer...

It actually depends on which state you buy it in... when I bought my car in Cali, I didn't have to pay any taxes there. Some states, like Florida (if I remember correctly), make you pay sales tax when it's sold.

That would mean that you'd pay tax to Florida, then to BC/AB/ON/etc when you registered the car.

At the end of the day, the MAN always has his hand out.
