Did you declare the price you actually bought the car? I don't intend to pay full taxes... 6% import +7% gst +8% pst is high enough already.

You're right, though... all of those taxes sure add up in a hurry... never mind the exchange rate (which isn't too too bad right now).

Brighand is right;
A friend of mine is a Customs Broker and I have heard stories.....
These guys know all the tricks in the book and all the sources for cars... if they catch you lying they will seize it and then the onus is on you to prove them wrong.
To the officer that seizes it it will be noted on his record and he will get a promotion qwicker.

Hi Dan!
You were right! He did get back to me (Thank you Brigand).
I am looking in New Hampshire so I would be able to transport the car myself. I just don't want to get stuck at the border, or worse, not being able to bring it into Canada (for whatever reason).
I'm not sure if it's best to pay a professional transport company to take care of everything, or to bite the bullet and do it myself. The only reason I am considering it is because the car is selling for an excellent price.
Derek
P.S. You're not too far, we should get together sometime.

Are you looking at an 928? Good luck on your New Hampshire importing experience!

Let me get this straight.
Let's just say for argument sake that exchange rate is 22% right now.
After USD->CDN exchange at 22%, you pay GST+PST and then another 6% (on the CDN $ value), tack on the $182+GST RIV fee and you still come way ahead of buying local?
I can understand that you can't find your particular car in Canada but is importing from the USA actually cheaper in the end?
I haven't even begun to list the travel cost (if you fly down to check it out or drive it back), shipping, insurance, etc.
Rough calculation:
35k USD @ 22% exchange is 42700CDN
42700*1.15 = 49105 (GST/PST in Ontario)
42700*0.06 + 49105 = $51667
51667+182 (RIV) = 51849
So that's $51849CDN for the $35k USD car, before any shipping|insurance|plane ticket costs.
note - I think I used the wrong rate, I think it should be 25% if you're buying USD currency which would make it even more expensive.
I'm only asking the question because I want to know if it's worthwhile to look for a 993 in the USA or not. Cost is a huge factor for me, I'm not looking for a rare model that is impossible to find (I hope not).
thanks

Hey Infinii, have you seen the 1995 Coupe that 911 Heaven is selling? It's a US car with 75k miles on it in black on black and cashmere interior. It has 2002 Carrera Lightweight five spoke wheels and the brakes have been painted red. The car is clean and I know that Mike had it advertised in the Autotrader for the last few weeks asking $45k for it.

Alon,
I didn't know about that site until you mentioned it. Registered but I can't find any forums, etc.
FYI, I need to sell my Boxster first. The used car market is in shambles nowadays with these cheap lease rates that dealers are offering. I'd be afraid of buying a 993 and then not being able to sell the 986 for a year.
thanks
oops, found the forums. seems the site doesnt support Safari very well. I had to use Firefox

Infinitii, you forgot the $100 for Air Conditionning!
I imported a car recently. I was lucky and got my CAD/USD spot rate at 0.84. It makes sense if you really can't find a car that you like in Canada; the market is just so big in the states.
Good luck!
