Default New Key Requirments for Boxster.

Hello All

I have been reading lots of threads about getting a second Key for a Boxster. Admittedly all the threads ae old but they all point to just giving up and just going to the dealer and paying the ridiculous price.

Is this information current ? or does anyone know if this can be done outside of the dealer these days ?

Have original key and all original barcode information that came with the car with respect to keys if that helps.

I remember just ordering a crypto48 key for my Audi a few years ago and having a mobile locksmith program it to the car. . I am not sure if the Porsche is the same .

Any recent info would be appreciated thanks.

The old information is still relevant and correct. Nothing has changed outside of the dealer process and fees. I would be curious if there is locksmith who can do this as well.

For some context, I have two keys. One suddenly stopped working a few weeks ago, and I expect it will start working again. This happens to me every year, but I'm not sure what causes this. I haven't explored the mobile locksmith option yet.

Well i read about some interesting hacks as the issue of losing the last key or having it fail is horrendous ,as in buying whole new immobilizer units and costs going into thousands.. ( at least for the car im looking at )

a popular hack seems to be take the pill out of the key and insert it inside the steering cowl so any correctly cut key can start it. seems to be a good solution in the short term .. as if a thief gets that far; lets face it , they are stealing it anyway ..

There is a fellow in Markham who gets his keys from Porsche in Atlanta, so he’s authorized. Doesn’t charge dealer prices. You’re looking at approximately $450 for him to supply the key, cut it and program to your car.

He’s called Ensun Locks. I can dig up his phone number if you’d like

If you just want a spare key to start the car, I was able to get a local (in Boston) generic locksmith to "copy" the pill in my existing 99 986 key and make a new key, cost about $100 USD three years ago.......

Explain it's an older Porsche (as soon as they heard Porsche they were ready to hang up.....), once they heard the year, they came around......

Worth a few phone calls......

Will do .. the car is not mine, i am just helping someone out. But will keep you updated. The one thing i have read about it is " no matter what it costs , get another key" .. the one key anxiety on these cars sounds worse than range anxiety with an EV.

sorry if i unlocked a new fear for anyone. .... lol.

My wife & I (joint owners) both have a key. There was no extra cost for this.

Any decent locksmith can copy the key code from the old key and cut a new key. To start the car and lock doors from handle.
