You don't need an ITN if you go down in person and are driving it back. You need the bill of sale and title only. If you are shipping, TFX with get the tax number from the dealer. I drove a 72 Corvette back from Indianapolis Indiana. If I recall correctly, I left Indy at 3 pm and got home to Oakville at 8 or 9 am the next morning driving straight through.

I bought the car in St Louis and the guy towed me to a Wendy's in Indianapolis. I recall it was 3 pm when I hit the road, but I bet that was when we left St. Louis. I got to the the border in Detroit around midnight or 1 am if I recall correctly and I stopped in London for an hour or two to rest a little before doing the last leg. Driving a 24 year old 454 Corvette with 29,000 original miles all that way is a little nerve wracking!

The border was a joke back then. The guy never even came out of the building to look at the car!

Back in 2021 i brought a 996 in from Washington to Vancouver, same thing happened to me then the Canadian agent didn't even go outside to check the car out, he just looked at it through the window. I was parked about 50 meters away as well.

I used an agent to provide the details 72 hours ahead, small fee. Worth it.

The RIV Canada website has all the info you need. Even though any car 15 years and older doesn’t have to go through the RIV inspection, their website is still useful on how to bring a car to Canada.

what many people don’t understand when bringing a car from the US to here, is that it is mostly an “export “ you are doing and you have to follow US Customs rules very closely. The “import” part of the process as administered by Canada is simple in comparison and is virtually nothing for 15+ year old cars.

hi
i just want to update that you need ITN to export a car through the border, maybe its a newly changed rule, but border officer is requesting ITN along with Title to be sent 72hrs prior to crossing the border,
i am going to do SARNIA/HURON , do you think Detroit/Windsor is as fast as Sarnia?

thank you

The borders are all the same. If you buy the car and don't go down to get it, the seller has to provide the ITN as they are deemed the exporter. If you are buying from a dealer, ask them for their IRS business number and they will provide it to you - give that to US Customs. If you go down and buy the car yourself, you are considered the exporter and you do not need an ITN. Your passport number will suffice. My guess is that they are asking you for the ITN because they believe that you are not buying the car in person.

Either way, ask the dealer for their IRS business tax number and submit that and see what they say. Easier way may be to just hire a broker for a few hundred to clear the car.

Need a broker who will complete the AES & ITN to import a car from US to Canada. - CorvetteForum - Chevrolet Corvette Forum Discussion

If you are buying from a private seller, have them go here and get a free ITN and send that...

If the imported car had not been previously registered in Canada, does luxury tax rear its ugly head?

Hi.

I am crossing the border at Sarnia today.
I have everything ready but little confused with the title.

I got an empty title from the seller (dealer) and a reassignment paper with all signatures and information. Is this enough? Or the original title need to be signed?

thank you. Bit worried

Can’t help you with that one as every state has their own practices. I suspect the dealer knows what to do__

You were supposed to have sent a copy of the title to US Customs 72 hours before arriving at the border with the car. If you haven’t done so they will not let you export the car out of the US

I am crossing now but canada is making me pay 6.1% import duty on 993 even though it’s over 25 years old.

they said only RIV program waived

That is not correct. Tell them to look at this memo and import using the import code cited:

Memorandum D10-15-20 - Interpretation of Tariff Item 9966.00.00 (cbsa-asfc.gc.ca)
