Default OT: VW GTI

I’m hoping to buy a ‘25 GTI as my daily driver. Is there anything I need to know or watch out for?

Great choice!! If possible, get a top optioned GTI (for the chassis/sport dampening)

My daily is a 24’ Golf R, and my kid has a 24’ GTI.

Daily driving a GTI since 2016. I'd buy another without question. I wouldn't say that for most of the cars I've owned over the last 40 years.

The uber sensitive touch buttons on steering wheel the current mk8 will be replaced with real buttons on the upcoming mk8.5 however it won't be available with stick.

Go for it.

Friend of mine in Vancouver just picked up a '24 GTI and can't shut up about it. Lease rate was quite competitive as well, if that's the route you're looking towards. I believe '24 is the last year they will offer a manual. '25+ is DSG only. I hope I am wrong.

There are some user interface complaints he's made about the car, and random issues where issues go away after a restart, but nothing debilitating like complete engine failure or anything of that sort. Otherwise, he's put in a lot of mileage on his car already because he's enjoying it that much.

Oh, just keep in mind, this car takes unicorn engine oil. It's a 0W20 with very few aftermarket options available, if DIY'ing is something you're looking to do while under the warranty period. I believe Mobil 1 and *I think* Motul offer an approved oil. Otherwise, it's stealership pricing.

The only thing I don't like about these cars is that they are ... ugly. Sorry, they just are.

I know it's subjective but stylistically things started wobbling with the Mk7 and with the Mk8 they went completely off the rails.

You probably can't do better from a build quality and solidity perspective but that face...

I had a chance to sit in a Mark VIII and any illusions of 'upgrading' from my 2018 were quickly disabused. Everything, I have not idea how they did it, felt somewhat cheapened. The way the doors close, the materials inside - even the tartan cloth seats seem somehow lower quality. That's even before getting into the lack of proper ***** and switches.

Just an opinion, but go sit in one and play around with it to make sure you're happy with the quality of the finishes and controls. GREAT car otherwise.

Cheers

Matt

Contradictory statement.

I'd counter that they are objectively handsome and well designed.

That said, I think they feel like expensive cheap cars. $20K roots shine through IMO.

I bought a 2021 last fall. Enjoying it. I did not like the completely digital dash of the 2022.

Canadian Tire shows the Mobil 0-20 on their website. It’s even on sale this week

Gonna go have a look in person
