"Canada’s EV-building strategy will cost Ottawa and provinces about $6 billion more than announced"

Actually, it costs taxpayers not Ottawa and the provinces.

Unfortunately it seems like when you're competing with myriad US & Mexican states for manufacturers to put down roots, you have to dangle billions of carrots in front of them.

I don't think it has always been this way but that's how it is now.

It has been that way since the late '70's anyway. Aeronautics, auto companies, food processors and farmers have been huge recipients. I'm amazed the Neo Marxist Star would print this but good on them. The one thing the PBO - who does a pretty good job - has been silent on is risk. Based on all realistic costing, EV's can only account for a small portion of car sales. China is the low-cost producer and Canada cannot compete with US and Chinese subsidies. Most government subsidized manufacturing projects have been failures or required ongoing taxpayer support. If they made sense they would be privately financed. Ask me how I know. More white elephants are in our future.

Non imperialist countries are fated to be exploited for their natural resources much like most of the rest of the world

Why should it cost anything?

Didn't bother reading it, but if EVs are so great, they should sell themselves. And stop pi$$ing my tax dollars on incentives.

These are tax breaks not subsidies and it is a very misleading piece independent of comparison to other industries. It also fails to mention what the industry does get taxed and is designed to mislead the unwitting. Most industries get various tax breaks far in excess of the petroleum industry which is Canada's most productive as well as highly taxed industry. It largely funds the $14 billion annual equalization payments to Quebec. There is a great argument for not taxing companies at all. At any rate this is scary......"government spending on business subsidies more than doubled (after adjusting for inflation) from $24.5 billion in 2007 to $52 billion in 2022 (the latest year of available data). Total provincial subsidies experienced the highest increase over the period growing from $13.2 billion in 2007 to $35.4 billion in 2022. Federal subsidies increased from $7.4 billion to $11.2 billion over the period." Stats Can data published by The Fraser Institute.
