Default OT: Rental Car Insurance

So, I am looking at rentals for a trip to BC (WHY IS BC SO EXPENSIVE FOR RENTALS?). I am going with my family, and picking up more family there. Looking at renting something big.

My credit card provides damage coverage to MSRP of $85,000.00. If the vehicle exceeds $85,000.00 THERE IS NO COVERAGE (quite common). Look, $85,000 used to be a boat load for most rentals. Now, depending on the trim level, a Tahoe would exceed $85,000.00. Any 5 passenger luxury vehicle would come close or exceed that. You could probably spec a model Y to be close to or over.

I note in the US Amex seems to offer greater coverage, at a fixed price. Does anyone know of something similar in Canada?

I recently smashed a rental in Switzerland. That car had a value of 50,000 Swiss franks. the rental insurance only kicked in after that 50k deductible. Luckily damage was only 5k and my CC covered it all. But it was months of back and forth with RBC and the rental company,

If you have not already looked check to see if you can rent using points. My rental last year that I smashed and another this March again back in Switzerland were basically free using Avion points.

Good luck on the trip.

That’s helpful re Switzerland- will check my coverage on Amex vs Visa as I will be driving a rental through there in September.

Do not rent from Europcar. The other rentals I have done with Avis have been great. Last one in March was an E220d wagon. Lovely vehicle.

Well, the solution for Ontario residents is bringing your OPCF-27 to $100,000 or more. It was quick and easy. Just like me. Also cheap. Also like me.

Am I the only one who prefers just taking the car rental company insurance? No risk to your personal car insurance rates + no worries about them hassling you for damage you didn't cause.

Although 99% of my car rentals are in Europe. I suppose in BC, they'd ding you either way..

Credit Card insurance may not cover you in Italy or Republic of Ireland due to local laws regarding rental cars. Also remember it will be listed in the policy value in CAD$$$

What I do now on higher end rentals is at the time of booking will select an insurance option that lowers my out of pocket to like 2500€. I can live with that. Also remember any supplemental insurance purchase voids your CC insurance

I just checked with my insurance company (the Personal). $100,000 Cdn coverage in NA with all of the same coverages/deductibles as my regular auto policy.

Chubb agent has confirmed in writing that my collision/fire theft coverage (from Canada) applies as well as my blanket liability policy, in North America and Europe...
