Default Off-Topic: Registering An Out-Of-Province Vehicle in Ontario

Hi Rennlisters,

Hope you all are well.

We have a 2004 Mini Cooper S in the family but located in Vancouver, BC. It is seeing very little usage and we've considered relocating it for our usage in Toronto. Given that it's registered in my father's name in BC, any idea whether it's better to transfer ownership to me and then safety + register in Ontario or can I simply do a transfer form with registration signed to me and register in Ontario?

Also, any recommendations on where to get the vehicle safety done in the GTA? The car isn't perfect and will need to have a handful of items addressed for sure, but I don't want to get hosed on the safety either. The intention is to register the vehicle in Ontario with an Ontario plate. Thanks in advance!

No need to register it in BC. Just take the BC ownership and safety and register it in Ontario.

Pretty sure you’ll have to register it in your name given that your dad doesn’t live in Ontario. But luckily a parent can gift a car to their child tax free here in Ontario There are forms to fill out which you can get at Service Ontario.

Maybe even check it out online

That is what I meant…he has to register it in Ontario, not his Father. True about the gift option. I did that at Christmas with my Son.

This is great advice. Gift it tax free.

Although an 04 Cooper may be worth less than the cost to get it from BC to Ontario

Yes, that is true. MVS Canada is asking $1900 all in for shipping.
