Disconnecting Battery on New Porsche
#16
I've never had any problems with a disconnected battery on my cars.
On my 987.2, I'd remove the battery for winter storage and when I start it up again, I would get a couple dash warnings like the TPMS, but they go away after a dozen seconds.
On my 981, I get zero warnings after disconnecting the battery.

Where I have power I use a CTEK and have used them for a number of cars - no problem with winter storage in the colder climate here and summer storage for other cars in blazing desert heat in Arizona.
However I have some parking with no power outlet and there I just disconnect the battery on my 997 RS, When I reconnect I use a booster and I get a bunch of messages.... no ABS etc. This all resets after the car is warm and I have a few minutes driving. Benn dong this for many years and no problem.

NO issues on use of a battery tender (trickle charger) - used mine for the last 20 yrs driving these cars that are notorious for battery drain. I do check my car weekly not for the battery tender more so to see how "she" is managing ... Gets lonely even if the garage is heated.

and for those complaining about battery drain, make sure you lock the car, puts just just about every modern car into 'sleep' mode.
should be able to go a month or two at a time with no charger without issue...many people are running with weak batteries but getting by with 'daily' summer use...

Ok, so my 2022 boxster is in storage. The battery drain seems to be terrible. I'm hesitant to use a battery tender in case it melts down.
What happens with a modern car when you disconnect? The battery in my westfalia which I keep disconnected is still good after 17 years, and I only have to charge it every few months.
I know I'll have to keep the trunk ajar because I won't be able to open it.

ETA: I left my battery in a heated basement without a battery tender. If your battery is considerably drained at disconnect, you should store it somewhere warm and with a battery tender.

Ok I'm convinced. I just ordered a NOCO 1 Amp charger. It has a long cable so I don't have to have it in the car, unlike the cheapo I had previously bought.
That snow this morning!! I took out the XC70 on the snow covered roads. I was even getting snow over the "bow". Just for a laugh, I stopped on the big hill outside our place. Restarted no problem.

Yes, the NOCO resets after a power outage; We had one a month or two ago. I completely forgot about it and went to the garage and noticed that it was back at going through its charge cycle.
As for the different amp versions, it depends on your vehicles and application and if you need a battery charged faster. I've always used 2A chargers knowing that my cars in storage will be sitting around for a while and I'm in no rush to get the car out. For bigger cars like trucks and big V8s, I would recommend a 5A. If you have heavy duty equipment like farm tractors etc. then a 10A is recommended.
I don't even know where you can find a CTEK these days. I bought one of the last batches sold by Canadian Tire many moons ago and it has its quirks, but the Noco takes the cake when it comes to reliability.

I am currently using two Porsche branded CTEKs, but if I had to get another charger, I will probably get a NOCO 5 or 10. The resetting after a power outage is critical. Does anyone run the battery charger on a surge protector?

We had a small blip of a power outage today and the Noco did its job as usual.

Are you happy with your NOCO? Any issues with connecting it to your Porsche? What amp rating?
#27
Yes, super happy with my Noco. I also have their portable jump starter/battery in case of emergencies which have helped me and several colleagues in a bind.
No issues connecting it to my Porsche but I have a lowly 986 Boxster S, not a modern Porsche, so keep that in mind. [Edit]Mine is the Noco Genius G3500 which is a 3.5A version and it's been awesome. My old CTEK when I had the 996 works but has oddball quirks like not resetting and it often goes haywire so I have to keep an eye on it regularly. It's possible that mine was part of a defective batch but shortly after I bought my CTEK, Canadian Tire stopped selling it altogether and I had lost the receipt and couldn't return it. The Noco - set it and forget it. I cannot recommend it enough.
Edit #2: My Noco Genius G3500 has since been discontinued but the new ones are similar in spec and are nicely redesigned.

I hook my C-Tek (purchased from Amazon) to the battery (+) and negative post, under the hood. I then fish the wire out the top of the hood (near the windshield) so that I can close the hood if I wanted to and connect the unit from there. No problem if there's a power failure this way.

I have the NOCO5 and like it better than my old CTEK, not sure if it will reset itself as I never pay attention to it (maybe it has and I didn't know it). I also installed a bluetooth battery monitor and I find it took my OCD away from keep checking on the NOCO5, money well spent

CTEK has a lighter adapter available too if you don't want the hassle of running wire to your battery.
