Default Clutch replacement

So looks like the clutch on my 997.1 is starting to slip. Will rev high but not engage momentarily if I’m trying to merge into a highway last few weeks.
Last night was cruising on the highway and had slowed down. When I pushed the gas in 6th gear going under 100 it just started to rev but slipped.
Certainly showing signs it’s on its last legs. 70k on it mostly city driving so can’t complain.
Now the big question…..what’s this gonna set me back?

you should do the RMS at the same time and plugs and coils while the engine is out.

Water pump is done. Just hoping I get out of all this for under 4K from my indie.

I would think so. A friend got a clutch, IMS and RMS done on a 996 for $4K this spring.

Buy your own parts and bring to Hunter. You won't be disappointed.

Brent can also get parts at very competitive prices.

I paid under 1k labor for clutch, flywheel, RMS, & slave cylinder a year ago

One more example of how great a guy Brent is: I inquired about getting Numeric cables from him + install, he told me to order from Amazon as they were best priced then I brought them in for install. He also mentioned his tech Jack had done a numeric install before so that gave me peace of mind and it was done an hour under shop time saving me $

Where is Brent located? I’m in Niagara and take my car to Auguste Lecourte in St. Catharines.

source your own parts. AutohausAZ had the best prices by far, when I did this earlier this year. I have a thread in the 996tt section with all the part numbers that I used. Not sure if it's the same for a 997.1, but i'm sure there will be a similar thread in that section.

Auguste will treat you well, especially if he is familiar with your car.

Only need to drop engine if Turbo or GT3/2.

No replacement IMS on 997. It's about a days work for the clutch, RMS and plugs. Engine stays in car. Hopefully you don't need a flywheel but always prepare for if.

Doing the RMS unless it is leaking (not sweating) was not recommended when I did my clutch last year as my good friend who is a 35+yr Porsche gold tech advised. He said that he had encountered quite a few replacement RMS leaks when replaced as a preventitive and then started to leak. He said the tolerances in this area are not great in the M96 / 97 engines and he said if it ain't really broke don't touch it . He said one cust who was under warranty had three RMS replaced under warranty due to leaking after a preventitive RMS being replaced with an initial clutch job. He said this really is one of those cases where if it Ain't broke ... don't fix it kids as you could be creating a whole other headache.

This is my logic as well. Based on my experience they start to leak after installation because it's installed crooked or too deep. Oddly enough I've been seeing more IMS cover leaks these days vs RMS

I am not a mechanic like you Greg- but I believe the transmission can be dropped on turbo/GT3/2 without engine to do clutch but most prefer to drop both.
Early 997 has IMS bearing.
carry on.
