Track Days
Well, as others have also pointed out, at a properly organized DE event everyone's safety is of the utmost importance. The idea is for everyone to have fun and at the end of the day go home happy with them and their car in one piece. They are Driver Education events - they are NOT competition events and racing is not tolerated. Period.
Unlike the Mickey Mouse lapping events that take place at Grand Bend or TMP (Cayuga), CTMP (Mosport) where most of the "serious" DE and lapping events are held is for an inexperienced driver a challenging track where almost every single corner is blind, has elevation changes and/or is off-camber. It also happens to be the fastest road course track in North America and third fastest in the world. If you are a yahoo and end up losing control while riding your 400lb bike at Grand Bend while trying to catch and pass someone, chances are that you are only going to cause some damage to your own bike and possibly hurt yourself. If you are a yahoo when driving a 4,000lb car at a DE event, you are endangering not only yourself but your instructor and other participants, and you can easily cause $500K worth of damage if you take out another car in the process. So yeah, expect that your maturity and attitude will indeed be constantly evaluated in addition to your driving skills both by your instructors and corner workers.
You asking whether your car will be faster than your neighbour's car that you'll be competing against is indeed a red flag, and I can guarantee you that you are going to be black flagged and/or told to go home by your instructor if that is indeed what your goal is. If you want to race against someone, PCA, BMW or DriveTeq lapping events are not for you.

welcome to the community, and enjoy. I’m sure you’ll be faster than your buddy.

I would encourage you to start with the right lapping organization that promotes respect, safety and learning. It's not about coming out and setting lap times. You'll have more fun, be a better driver and bring your car home in one piece! Congrats on your amazing car!!! I hope to meet you at a lapping day someday.
If racing against your buddy and how much power you have is in fact what you think DEs are about, then I am afraid that you may be a yahoo (the PCA club certainly seems to attract more of them than either DriveTeq or the BMW club - the very responses from some members in this very thread make it rather obvious why that is). If you are willing to listen, learn and drive within your limit as you keep on improving your skills, then we're all going to have an awesome time and I'll be the first one to tell you that you're doing an awesome job and offer you a beverage afterwards.

Playing devils advocate here. The OP stated “competing against his neighbour”. But none of us know what that means to him and his neighbour. It could be just some comparisons at the end of the day regarding lap times. It does not necessarily mean that he is going to be a yahoo on the track.
To the OP, welcome to the club. Hope your not to bruised up from your “jumping in”. LOL

If anyone needs a reminder as to why attitudes and intent are sometimes called into question at track days, can I share the opening day at Cayuga last year:

I read the OP's inquiry as they would be comparing lap times at the end of the day, not going wheel to wheel like the ********* in the linked video.

insignificant point but Road Atlanta is the fastest road course in North America and Mosport is second.
