I have 2 forever vehicles. The Porsche. Also my 2015 Jeep Wrangler that will never be sold. When it is older, will be left at the cottage and dedicated to cottage duties. I have owned mostly Japanese vehicles. All dependable. The Jeep has been more dependable.

I keep a Wrangler for off-roading in Arizona.....tough as old boots and very few problems

The W140 is the reason I have a Benz. When I was a kid I got to sit in a brand new one at the auto show. I remember trying to talk to the salesman at the show. Totally condescending. Lol. I see W140 styling cues even in the curves of my W221. These things do last forever if you take care of them?

The M119 engine is bulletproof. The 5 speed transmissions can have issues with oil seeping into an electrical connector, but that’s a simple fix. The older mechanical 4 speed is perhaps more reliable but second gear start kills the performance; electronic 5 speed with first gear start is much more responsive and smoother. Pre-facelift models had biodegradable engine wiring harness issues, though this is a post-facelift model, and engine wiring harnesses have been replaced on many of the older cars.

I’ve spent a bunch of money fixing little things (eg. soft close door actuator air leak and pump failure, pneumatic door lock actuator replacement, replacing accumulators for the hydraulic SLS suspension, replacing electrochromic side mirror whose fluid deteriorated, replacing double glazed rear window which had some delamination and partial defroster line failure, and power radio antenna gearbox recently failed on me). However, the powertrain is rock solid on these.

Yea, an S class is a hobby. Keep in mind I only paid 30k for a car with a 140k MSRP. Here's my experience. 2013 S550 4 matic bought with 100km. Now at 130km. Needed new tires. 1 CV boot. Vacuum pump leaked. Air box hoses.Timing chain cover. Full drive train service, which was front diff, rear diff, transmission/ transfer case fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid. Windshield.Full paint correction. The front grill cracked. Unfortunately you can't go aftermarket with distronic. This was a 2 "owner" lease car. Services pending are spark plugs and coolant. This was a dealer maintained car. It's like all these rich people throw any toys. A ton of differed maintenance. If this was just a car to me I wouldn't own it. I did all this work myself because my hobby is cars. I wouldn't own this if I took it to a dealer. If you do the maintenance these are great cars. I am wondering if or when the air suspension will start to require attention. So far so good on that front. You need access to a MB star system to view some of the MB specific codes. You can get away with only so much with a standard code reader. The aftermarket has alot of parts available. You can diminish your ownership cost somewhat.
