No. Sadly, it's slower. I have a lot of time in Mooneys and people were excited when this came out. First new piston aircraft engine in years. 217 hp with a high rev-ing six cylinder in the M20L vs 200 hp in the four cylinder, Lycoming-powered, M20J. The Porsche PFM 3200 engine also had a "sophisticated" engine management system vs magnetos and manual mixture controls in the 50's era Lycoming.
Alas, aerodynamics. It had a larger cross section with all the accessories and reduction gearing. It was also heavier. They only sold 41 Mooneys and only 80 engines total. Paying more money for going slower and carrying less payload was a hard sell. Even with the bad-assed Porsche decal on the cowl and custom leather interior with Porsche emblems on every surface. They stopped production in '91. Porsche kept supporting it until 2007 when they surrendered their type certificate. Owners may continue to operate but Porsche will no longer provide spare parts so buyer beware. It might be a lawn ornament parked next to your Porsche tractor.

Between this aircraft engine program and the 959 losses - it cost the job of the CEO (Peter Schutz) as well as Helmuth Bott a few months later. Ferry fell under the influence of Wendelin Wiedeking (aka ****** Boi - my name for him) and severe cost cutting became the name of the game as well as cheapening up the product lines.
