Default [The Refinery] Saving a guards red 944 S

Hi all!

I wanted to share some pics from this recent project. This is a 1988 Porsche 944 S in Guards Red, but as you can see from the "before" photos the paint condition was in really rough shape. Mostly it was heavily oxidized, which is common with single stage paint if it's not properly cared for and protected. It also had several chips and gouges - mostly around the rockers and wheel openings that we had our specialist touch-up.

After the initial clean up and decontamination process, we performed paint correction and then followed it up with the Ceramic Pro "Silver" package to protect the paintwork for years to come. As you can see, the results were fantastic.

For those interested, we have a 5 episode video series on this project coming soon to show our approach and decision process at each step along the way. And for more visuals of this and other projects, be sure to check us out on Instagram and Facebook @therefineryltd

As always, please reach out if you have any questions or would like to book an appointment for your car at The Refinery!

1988 944 S Project Summary:

While at The Refinery, the 944 received:
  1. 1-Step Paint Correction to perfect the finish prior to applying the protective layers
  2. XPEL Ultimate Plus paint protection film (PPF) on the front emblem panel and headlights
  3. Ceramic Pro coating on all PPF, paintwork, wheel faces, and exhaust
For the decontamination prep, we used the following products and tools:
The Refinery's Wash + Rinse buckets with Dirt Lock bucket insert
Gyeon "Bathe" wash soap
Gyeon Premium Wool Wash Mitt
P21S All Purpose Wash
Gyeon Iron
Gyeon Tar
Sonax Clay Disk
Gyeon "Silk Dryer" microfiber drying towel (large)

During the polishing stage, we used:
Rupes LHR15 (MKII) polisher
Rupes LHR75E polisher
Meguiars MF Cutting Pads
Rupes Yellow (Fine) pads
Jescar Correcting Compound
Sonax Perfect Finish polish
Gyeon "Polish Wipe" microfiber towels
Gyeon PREP (for wipe-down after polishing)

Here are the pictures!

The 944 S has arrived.

The paint is heavily oxidized, and covered in sap and other surface contamination.

Getting it washed up.

Gyeon Iron, Gyeon Tar and Sonax Clay Pad were all used to prepare the surface for paint correction.

The 944 is clean, but still "pink" with oxidation.

A compounding step was used to remove the thick layer of oxidation, exposing the fresh Guards Red paint hidden beneath.

Paint correction is completed, and Ceramic Pro coating has been applied to the paint, wheels, windows and exhaust to protect the finish for years to come!

Single stage guards red is the best. Even at 30 years old can still be brought back to life. That would never happen on a 30 yr old clear coat.

Yes, it's pretty amazing. When the 944 was dropped off, we had it parked next to my GR 993 and we were thinking - it seems impossible that this 944 could look like this 993. But of course, it does now...

thanks for the comments everyone!
