Default teenage drivers, only 2 keys per vehicle...

Question for those of you with new drivers at home....

Do you still just survive with 2 key fobs per vehicle?

My 16 year old daughter is working slowly towards her G2, when she gets that, what happens to the key situation?

Currently, my wife and I each have a set of keys for the daily drivers, with the house keys and other misc keys attached...

Back when I first got my license in the late 80's, we just cut an extra key for the 1982 corolla station wagon at Cdn Tire for $1-2....

I haven't priced keyfobs yet for VW or Audi, but they can't be cheap.

We only use one key for each car and keep them at a common location so that when one of us wants to use the car, they just grab it. The second key is kept in a drawer as an emergency spare. I don't see the need to carry a a key for every car all the time.

i suck at keeping track of my keys... I have a tile on each of our car keys...

my golf keys have house key, parents house key, mailbox key and tile.
boxster key just has the tile - my wife hardly drives it
q7 keys - house key, roofbox key, roof rack key

may have to switch up our standard of practice when daughter gets license.

Same here. Except our van has a valet key, so I keep that on my key ring and just kick it old school when I have to drive it.

Same here, my three kids share one car. The key is always to be left on the key hook when the car is parked at home. I’ve never seen the need for each of us to have a separate key. The second set is strictly a “spare key” which is kept in the spare key basket for emergencies. I see people walk around carrying multiple sets of car keys chained together, but we’ve never felt the need to do that.

I try to keep it simple...
House has a keypad deadbolt on it so nobody carries a house key
In the trunk of the SUV there is a big bunch of keys for the; Thule locks, trailer locks, tongue locks....
Mailbox key is in each car’s ash tray
Office Key Fob is in my computer backpack attached to a lanyard
In my pocket at any time is only one car key

this is what we do .... we have a " key draw" .. which is just a plastic box in a draw that the key always goes back to where we come in.. NOT near the front door or anywhere it can be scanned.. it becomes habit very quickly... but like any new habit, you have to work at it in the beginning.

Petee_c - what is the car? You say VW/OOOO ?
I priced a new macan key FOB. It was 658.79 cdn tax in programmed.
Do you want another key? I'm sure a VW/OOOO fob would be 500ish?
Best bet. Never have more than on FOB on a key ring.
I have my name and phone number on the FOB's. At least there is a chance that someone will return it.
Also - never open a can of paint with the key blade. Bad things happen.

Mine is a 2015 Golf TDI 6 speed
Wife is a 2015 Audi q7 TDI

Daughter is learning stick, she will likely be borrowing the Golf more than the q7...

Lots of good suggestions on this thread...

A slight hijack here (sorry) but do you have any quick tips/rules that you can share on how to deal with three kids sharing a car? Driving time, cleanliness, gas costs, etc.. We just bought a Golf for my daughter and son, she is driving now and he starts in 6 months. Just starting to think about what rules we will have to put in place to keep the peace.

Thanks

I’ve been lucky where they have generally not needed the car at the same time. The oldest worked out of town for the summer so it was mainly being shared by two. This week two left for university so the youngest in grade 12 has the car till May. I do stay on top of them to keep it clean and washed with limited success.

I would leave it up to the two kids to figure out who needs the car and when. As for the gas, they need to figure out between each other too what they think is reasonable as well as keeping it clean. You've done your job by providing them with a car.

Its almost winter. I'm sure you are running snow tires and rims.
Daughter or son, they need to know how to check the oil and fill the windshield wiper fluid, and check tire pressure.
I have my 14 and 16 year old help me change the snow tires over. Even the wife gets involved. She has even recently suggested she needs practice.
If you don't have a warm-ish garage to do this yourself. Teach them in the driveway, now, when its warm?
"LATER DAD". Never happens. On the phone, late at night, in a snow storm. Is no time to teach.

6 years ago, I bought my boys a 1967 starcraft tin boat. 12 foot, car topper, with a 93 merc 9.9. Slightly weepy.
The 10 year old said "why did you buy us such a crappy boat?"

I thought for a moment and said, "because it builds boating character!".
How do you know what a good boat is, when you've never had a bad boat.
