Ok... ims... it was quite problematic on the 996 and the first 997 year 2005 they had 6-8% failure rate. From 2006 to 2008, they have 1-2% failure rate (thanks to bigger and wider ims bearings) and most failures come from the 3.8 S engines and/or tracked cars.

As a comparison, the PDK transmission on the 997.2, have a 12-15% failure rate (twice the ims failures on the 996) and cost almost as much to change/repair.

As I say everytime I write about it, nevermind me, just check out the poles on this very forum, answered by this communitie's members.

I prefer by far the looks of a 997 with widebody over the 996 and I couldn't care less about which version. The exterior looks classic 911 and the interior at least looks like it belongs in this century. Add a pioneer or kenwood sound system with android auto and apple carplay and the technology is up to date. Or at least close enough to most other new car makes.

Steph 1: wow. that is the first time I have heard anyone put exact percentages on IMS failures. Where is this data from? what is the failure rate on bore scoring?
are you saying the PDK costs the same as changing IMS? or PDK repair costs the same as a complete engine rebuild from an IMS failure?

You either don't pay attention to polls on here, or you don't come often. I got my 997 in late winter so I did tons of searches on here and on european forums and they all say basically the same...

Just do a quick search and you'll find the polls very quickly.

Anyone able to share any recent actual selling prices for 996 C4S or 997.1 C4 or C4S? Asking prices seem to all be around the high $30's to high $40's for similar mileage cars (100-130K KMS)

Ok, so no responses yet to the above, but I have an update.

Have now driven 6 cars - 4 996 C4S, 1 997.1 C4S, 1 997.1 C4. Really liked them all, albeit somewhat limited test drives, I found the 997 C4S heavier than any of the others. I really liked the 996's. and a factor in this is the pricing. For me, Im not sure I would get the added driving experience out of the newer cars, and 2 of the 3 had updated head units with Bluetooth etc, so from a feature perspective. All of these cars are either on Kijiji or Autotrader (except one who is a friend of a friend) so you could probably figure out the ones I drove.

All of the 996's have had IMS done, although one had the IMS done but not the clutch at the same time, which surprised be a bit. the 997 owner says his has the newer, larger IMS based on the build date, but I am not sure that gives me too much piece of mind.

A few other items - all have between 90,000 - 135,000 kms - so none too high and I would say 90k on a 17 year old car is not very much at all.

The funny thing is the pricing, from $35-50K. I think the 996's could go below $35 k, maybe $32 ish? With IMS clutches done, seems like a good deal. I am having a hard time justifying a 997.1 C4S for $12-15K more with similar mileage and no IMS or clutch done?

Also going to drive two turbos this week, but if I was in a rush or had to do something, I would be going for one of the 996 C4S's, price is good, IMS and Clutch done, not high mileage, etc.

If anyone has recent experience with any of the cars for sale in the GTA, or any info on actual selling prices, I would love to know. You can also PM me.

whaat makes you say : you think the newer cars have any added driving experience? I think the older cars have added driving experience over the newer ones(GT cars excluded).

997.1 and 996.1 are so similar in suspension and steering. I doubt there is any lack or addition to driving experience that one could feel. The 997.1 Turbo had all the new electronic awd changes but this wasn't used until the 997.2 was released.

My assumption was the 997 was an improved driving experience due to continued improvements in technology or just by virtue of being newer.

My point was that I really enjoyed the 996's.

I am also still somewhat confused by the ISMB part (can of worms, I know). A 996 C4S with ISMB upgraded would seem like a better bet than a 997.1 (2006) without the upgrade? I think the 997.1 still have ISMB issues (although perhaps not as many, but then I hear about bore scoring?)

Having said that I am still open to both. I think the 996 C4S can be had mid $30's with ISMB/Clutch done, 997.1 C4S in low to mid $40's? If I am going to spend high $40's then I would look at a turbo.

Would still like some info on actual selling prices out there.

I paid $44k OTD for my 997.1 C4 about a month ago. 94k km, 1 owner, service history, and the dealer had the car safetied/oil change/inspected at Zorotech. The car had been at this dealer for maybe 2 or so months if that changes anything.

I also own an e36 but it is a supercharged 325is.

I went with a 996 C4S. Since it was new, I had always loved the wide hips and red stripe across the back.
