3.2 L. engine interchange
A while back RND engines was clearing out boxster engines:

Hi Bud,
The initial symptom was oil in the coolant - that nice murky mess floating on the top of the coolant fill tube. I had recently purchased the car so I checked the carfacts report and found the previous owner had changed the oil cooler - apparently not the problem.
The second symptom was that I could hear a "rattle" sound. This led me to suspect/fear early stages of the dreaded IMS bearing failure.
I did a leakdown test on the cooling system and found a tiny crack in the cylinder head. That meant the engine was coming out.
I pulled the IMS bearing and to my surprise, it had not yet failed. but it was about to, it was rough feeling. As I pulled the ims bearing I happened to push on the crankshaft. There was way too much axial movement. That meant teardown, which is when I found the thrust bearings shot. I have lots of pictures if anyone is interested.
Anyway, still looking for help finding a good source for a replacement used engine.

I'm currently daily driving my 2000 S with 130km on it
Hi Bud, Initially, the rattle was very brief on start up and hardly noticeable. Then very suddenly, there was an increase in sound and I shut the engine down within seconds. That may have been the point where the thrust bearing failed. I am about to head out skiing, but I will attach some pics on my return.
Gregg.
I'm quite hands on, although I am new at Porsche engines. Willing to rebuild my engine, but I am looking at a crank, bearing housing, cylinder head, bearings, gaskets, and cam timing tools. Looks like it may be more expensive than a used engine or a wrecked complete car. Although the project looks significant, I think that getting this intimate with the car is a good thing in the long run. Budget, perhaps $6000, (that might be opitimistic.) I do like the car - it is fun and that is what I am really after.

Sounds like you can handle this. An engine is an engine, they are all more or less the same just designed slightly differently. Your best bet would be to buy a wrecked car and pull the engine. By selling the rest, you could get a lot of the money back. Make sure the car was in a collision and not in a flood or vandalized.
