so, what i'd read (and d@mned if i can find a reference now) was that the 3.2 had forged pistons (vs cast in the 2.5, 2.7 and even 3.4). apparently they all had forged cranks and conn rods. ? =

I suggest he contact someone that rebuilds these engines. There is lots of misinformation on the net and fist hand experience is scarce.

I know you're hoping for a Porsche, but there is what looks to be a very nice, still street legal, E46 M3 race car just listed for sale in the PCA UCR classifieds for $24k CAD. Assuming it checks out and is ready to roll, that would be an excellent track day car to run. It also has a hitch and you can purchase the guys tire trailer as well for turn key DE fun.

For what it's worth: I rode along in Peter Carroll's E46 M3 track car last season which is still street legal and he drives to / from the track. The car is exceptionally well balanced and FAST especially with a guy like Peter driving. He was ripping off sub 1:30 laps while maintaining a full conversation with me, and driving the car home after the event on the same tires he runs at the track (Trofeo R). An E46 M3, setup correctly for the track, is a beast.

Three Wheelin'
First I've got limited experience. Started DEing my 2009 Boxster Oct 2017. Did five DEs at Summit Point last year. FWIW I'd vote for a 2013-2016 Cayman S with Sports Chrono unless you want a manual. On my wish list to upgrade to a 981. Easily within your budget. You can get a CPO from Porsche (Porsche.com/usa Pre-owned) and have at least two years warranty. I'm hooked on my PDK. Added Sport/Sport+ last Spring. Sport+ is basically a track mode keeping RPMs above 4K to redline. I run Hawk 60s as track pads with a dedicated rotor on the front. They are too squeaky for the street and switch back to street pads depending on how much street driving I plan before they next DE. I can change my front (and rear) pads without removing the calipers. You have to remove the front calipers on the 981s which has upgraded front brakes. Running Michelin Sport 4S. Much of the maintenance can be DIY. Obviously there is a big difference between a car you drive at a DE and a race car. You can drive a bone stock Cayman S at a weekend DE and only risk using up your front brake pads. I'm sure you have learned, a more frequent brake fluid flush is required with an upgrade to a racing brake fluid like ATP 200. Keep us posted!
