Emission test or no emission test?
This $hit is getting confusing to me.
Things changed since the last time I sold a project car. Last February I had to eTest the car when it sold in order for the next owner to be able to get it registered and plated. Today I took my lastest project ('02 Jetta) in for a safety and eTest and the shop called back saying that it doesn’t require an eTest. BUT when I check the Driveclean history, the last one is older than 2 years. When I got the car (from my next door neighbor) he said it needed to be eTested (his mother got the notice in the mail before she didn't pass her senior's driver exam). So does this mean the buyer will have to eTest it before registering or they will eventually get a Drivcelan notice around the time of the sticker renewal to take it in for an eTest?

No more e-test on vehicle transfers as of April1. Only e-tests every two years for sticker renewals. Only exception is family gifts for cars 7 years or older.

Ok so the eTest is now the responsibility of the next owner then when they need to renew the sticker? If get it eTested now it makes no difference?

no etest for transfer, get a grace period until the next required etest cycle at your renewal... from my experience/understanding, a car could theoretically never need an etest if it kept passing hands...

That's treacly what the shop told me today too. At least now the eTest isn't part of the headache to sell a used car. Funny how things change to something more logical when the government removes a fee.

Yes you have to still eTest anything '88-up. Used to be a rolling 20 year limit so cars older than 20 years became exempt from eTesting but they stopped this when they reached '88 (in 2008). After that it was anything '88-up will always need to be tested and I haven't heard anything about changing this yet. I think it's stupid not to keep the 20 year rolling.
