Default Greetings from the 'Tron - newbie Porsche owner

Kia Ora chaps (and chapesses...) I posted this in the 944 forums, but figured I'd also do the same here as it's a bit closer to home IYKWIM...

Well last week I took the plunge and bought my first ever Porsche - an '86 N/A in white with the burgundy coloured interior. It has 180,000km on it (that's about 112k miles to you non-metricised peeps ). Overall it's in pretty tidy condition but of course will need some fettling and tinkering with.

Ever since seeing a pale gold 944 back in the 80's while walking home past a semi-snobby girl's school (Chilton St James in Lower Hutt) I've always like them. It had something the 924 (to my eyes) never had - presence.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I purchased it from the guys at EuroPacific Porsche Specialists in Pirongia near where I live and it seems to have been looked after pretty well.

In learning to live with it, there are a few things that I have questions on, and want to know more about.

(1) the oil pressure needle flickers sometimes when backing off the throttle, but usually it stays at around 5bar I think.

(2) it has a fuel economy meter where the 951 would normally have a boost gauge - it seems to stick showing 14l/100km, then when tapped repeatedly settles down to around 7 - 8L/100km when cruising. Can these be freed up somehow so it actually works properly? I've not seen this gauge on all the other oval dash '44s I've looked at.

(3) The instrument lights are pathetic! What can be done to improve these? I strain to read them in the dark. And yes, I've checked that the dimmer **** is wound to maximum! [Edit - Matt has given me the link to the Clark's garage solution]

(4) the headlamps on low beam are a bit feeble - any suggestions for improvement there?

(5) it's a bit squirmy over bumpy/undulating surfaces like Waikato backroads - could be a sign of needing a steering rack rebuild in it's future?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to learning from the collective wisdom from you guys, and I'll post some pics of the Panzerwagen

Yeah. the local watering hole is "Any Rennlisters from New Zealand" so come on over and repost. At least 5 other 944 owners on there who may have some answers for you.

Thanks for posting pics of your car, we could do with seeing more of the 944s.
