Rhamy: I will be joining very soon, getting my 951 back together, the cylinder head just got married to the block today, and everything is done by myself along with the factory workshop manual(s) and Haynes manual as well.

By x-mas, i might be going for a tec 3 standalone kit, and my mid next year, some other goodies will sure follow.....lots to do, so little time

Hello Gang,

Long time lurker here, first time poster.

So it looks like I will be moving to Dubai sometime this November. And the job is decent enough that I can afford a Porsche (my first :-) )

I could use some help from you folk in finding a car, typical prices etc.

I've decided on a used Porsche Cayenne S. A 2003/2004 (so someone else pays the depreciation). I *could* go (finances) upto a 2005 but I would prefer not to.

What's the used market like? How much would one run me? Also, how to dealerships for new cars work? Is it like the USA where you have a MSRP that can be bargained down or is it a set price?

Thanks in advance ... KSR

AL Naboodah (Porsche Dealer) will do nothing but drain you're money, sorry. If the car still has the warrenty, you are obliged to go to the dealer in order not to void the warrenty.

The local dealer isn't good at all, they don't know what they are doing, besides setting fire to a customer's freshly rebuilt $10,000+ 964.......

House of cars are an independent specialist, they are OK, not bad.

Quater Mile, another specialist, is good, they know what they are doing.......

Prices vary, here is what the local paper shows:

Porsche Cayenne 4.5 L, 2005 model, fully loaded, lady driven, 40,000 kms, Dhs 200,000/

Porsche Cayenne S, 2003, white, FSH, 51,000 kms, fully loaded, in VGC, for sale.

Hi Hosrom,

Thanks for the quick reply. Coud you tell me the price on the 2003 you listed, it didn't come through in your last post.

The only advantage of Al Nabboudh would be the benefit(?) of getting a PCO Cayenne.

Would you recomend just scanning the adverts and finding one myself? I'm assuming I could get it completely checked out at a mechanic before purchase.

A 2003/2004 Cayenne S goes for between $40 and $45k here in LA ... Does that sound comparable to Dubai?

Cheers , KSR

KSR,
i will do some homework for you, since the prices i posted above are from various years (2004+) and are Turbo models, but still go for a good price.

Al Naboodah WILL close you're bank account LOL, and you wouldn't be happy with the service they do, since they are the only dealers in town, along with 2-3 other specialists, hence why they charge so much.

Thanks Hosram. I'm Krishna BTW. Nice to meet you all and I hope to stay involved once i get there.

That is a DAMN good price for a Turbo actually. A 2005 Turbo for about 55k is a very good price.

I thought about getting a Turbo but think it might be overkill. I don't want this to be a poser car. It will be my daily driver and i would DEFINITELY want to take it out in the desert.

Thanks again ..

Krishna

Ok folks... I am selling the 944 I just bought 4 months ago...

I bought the car when I thought we would be moving into a villa and I would have to commute to work. However we were able to work out the lease in our apartment, and stayed there. I live just a few buildings down from my office building, so I walk to work. I live on Sheikh Zayed Road. I have 2 kids and so we use our SUV for carrying kids, and I only drive the Porsche about once a week, if even that often. Things are changing at my office, and our future staying in Dubai is in question, while I may still be here quite a while I donot want to be surprised and all of a sudden have to leave and have a car to sell last minute. So since i donot need it for transportation and I am worried my contract could come to an end, I have decided to go ahead and sell the car.

If anyone is interested here are the details.

1989 Porsche 944. 84000km on the odometer. I have only put about 500km on the car in 4 months. The body is in good shape. There are three dings in the passenger side, but none in the driver side. the passenger side dings can likely be taken out by dentmaster, which was my plan, I just hadn't gotten to it yet. The engine runs good, but it does need a tuneup, the idle seems a little off. The interior is in VGC, except the shift boot has a crack in it, and the center console hinge needs replacing. The hinge is $25 to replace, the shift boot has 2 options aftermarket, or genuine porsche replacement, price varies from $75-$400. There is a missing centercap on the right front wheel.

The car is NON-US spec. I am from the states and the import regulations of the states are very annoying and expensive. I got a quote and it would cost $8000 to send the car to the states with me and have it pass all the required US import exhaust and safety tests, which is more than it's current market value, if that was not the case I would be keeping it, and shipping it back with me.

The bad - NO MAINTANENCE records. I was lied to when I bought the car, which was my mistake. The seller told me the mechanic had the records, and I could get them from him. The mechanic indeed had been working on the car for the last 4ish years, however he had opened and closed several shops and was fired from other shops, and so the maintanence records were not kept during all the moves. He is a shady mechanic, and Hosrom can also fill you in on him, as he and I spoke about it as well.

PM me if interested.

Brian,
Hmmm, that's a shame, but i guess you got to do what you got to do......

Now, since there are no records, i would like to find out if the usual items have been replaced, such as water pump, belts, rollers, front seals, mounts, fluids replaced, filters replaced, pads/disk etc..... the usual things that go wronge with the 944........

I could find someone who is interested.......MAYBE

Shame about having to sell you car, it looks quite nice, best of luck withe the sale.

Shame you also had to run into the shady character mentioned, I had a a run in or two with him....like the time he tried to zip tie my engine pan on! And ohh yeah the time he tried to tell me the spongy feel on my newly bled brakes was okay..."just pump them"...yeah right!

I haven't done anything to the car, it sits in my parking garage collecting dust right now. I drove it last night from my apartment (next to chelsea tower) down to the Crown Plaza and back. First time it was driven in over a week. Honestly I doubt I have put even 300km on it in 4 months.

So to answer your question. None of the normals have been looked into. Since we didn't move into a villa as planned, I donot have a location to do the work, and my time is very short as well... sucks, but well that is the position I am in at the moment.

I may have to leave Dubai in December, or I could still be here through July next year, I just donot know right now, so since I donot need the car it just makes sense to sell it. Just in case I leave earlier as opposed to later. Otherwise it could be one of those I have to sell it in 2 weeks deal and I would really loose my shirt over it.
