Default Coolant temp does not go above 194*F

Took my 2014 Cayman S DD to track for the 1st time on Monday. I keep a log of several measures with the track car so out of habit did it with the DD as well. Oddly, the coolant temp never exceeded 194*F even when it started the session @ 194*.

Monday @ Lime Rock was Africa hot. Ambient got to 98*F @ 3pm while the paddock topped out @ 134*F. Given this, the coolant temp seems odd especially since the oil reached 238, 250, 256 and 252 in the (4) sessions.

With no Cayman experience, I am wondering, is this normal?

The temperature gauge is very "numb". Its rarely moves unless the coolant is really overheated. Then it blows out on the ground. Normal. If you ran a data system that picks up info from the CAN you can get real temperatures.

Understood. I guess I'll use the oil temp to determine if I need to back off, do a cool down lap or two. At what oil temp is this generally recommended?

My cayman doesn't give oil temp but my Audi does. Both run Mobil 1 0W-40 and the Audi (street only) runs around 205 - 220 degrees depending on ambient and road conditions.

I assume that's the proper operating temp for the oil.

On the track, I'd think north of 240 requires cool down or additional cooling mods.

My oil temp alarm goes off at 250 deg F. I try not to go over 260 deg F.

At those temps you need a better oil than Mobil 1. I run Joe Gibbs racing oil.

I would agree with Frank completely. Don't run engine on street oil higher then 240F. I use my Solo DL with CAN bus to monitor real time along with pressure drops on some corners when RPM drops. It is hard to keep your perfect line execution with constant temperature watching.

We run many Porsches on the track and all use Mobil 1. I set the oil temp alarms at 250 F. We ran an 09 Cayman in Grand AM a few years ago at NJMP and the ambient temp was over 110. Our car ran a 2 hr 45 min race with oil around 280 F and water 245 F. I was a nervous nellie, but the car performed perfectly and is still running track days now. That said, I'd pull my street car off the track at 250 F oil. Also, most of the Porsches that have water and oil sensors show a 30 to 35 difference between water temp and oil temp, so don't rely on your water temp gauge.

Don't want to start an oil debate but I've been changing oil every 4 - 6 track days and sending to Blackstone. So far, all reports are good.

You can get a OBD2 port transmitter w/ bluetooth and get Coolant readings logged onto your smartphone. It's easy and you'll get fairly accurate readings. Harry's Lap Timer can give coolant info as well as some free apps like Dash Command.

Thanks Mark, will look these. It just seems odd that the oil gauge works fine but the coolant gauge does not. The TPMS was not much better. As pressures rose throughout the sessions, the TPMS showed pressures declining. One by one, I got dash warnings of 6, 7, 8, up to 11 psi too low. 1st time it occurred, I pulled into paddock to confirm and saw it wrong. Ignored it the rest of the day.

When you tap into the OBD port and download the data you will find that the coolant runs about 30 - 40 degrees lower than the oil. If your getting into the high 270's with your oil temp then you definitely need to think about adding the third/center radiator. Been there, done that.
