Do track tires wear out this fast?
A friend of mine emailed me this. Is this typical?
I remember a guy in a fast run group told me he can go thru P-Zero tires in a weekend, so he trailers in track tires that might last two weekends.
In fact, he rotates his tires right to left during events in order to evenly wear them out.
I believe him...he comes back from the track and his brakes are smoking! Black run group of course.

Yes.
In fact, I run GY 255 which can last 1/2 - 1 day including a flip on the rims!

My slicks give me their best for about 60 miles... Thirty laps at Summit Main this past weekend.

I did 3.5 hours of open tracking today at WGI and 2 of my 4 brand-new-to-this-event RE71Rs will need to be flipped on the rims for Mid-O next week.

Typical for street tires at a HPDE? Not anywhere close. It has been a long time since I ran street tires, but my NT01s last for 60 or so heat cycles until they cord. So far my current set have been through 55 HC and have probably 40 or 35% tread left! Lighter car (2800 lbs and 245 hp) so YMMV but that is 5 weekends so far and still sticky.

Tire wear....
The best band for the buck, Nitto NT-01 tires, bar none. Expect 20+ heat cycles. The down side, they are rated at DOT 100, contrast to Hoosiers DOT 40, harder ribber = slower track times (2 seconds a lap?). If you are out there just for fun, the NT-01 is a spectacular tire.
I just cooked a rear R7 Hoosier last weekend, 11 heat cycles...right down to the cord. I was running them at Willow Springs Raceway, 90 + degrees. I was anticipating using them for practice tires through about HC 15, not the case. The fronts felt good....may just buy 2 new rears and replace the fronts as needed. Not "classic" tire management strategy, agreed.

Folks, it's super dependent on speed... one person's nine-tenths (twenty heat cycles) is another person's seven-tenths (four to six heat cycles at their nine-tenths).

Three Wheelin'
tire brand & model, speed, track, setup, car, drive style/smoothness, weather all come into play
this is a pic of my new RE71R after 8 heat cycles on WGI resulting in about 6 hours of actual run time on my GT4 during relatively cool (45-65F) weather
I was running 2:09 - 2:11

Yes, Roebling or CMP could destroy a set of tires in one session, if you're not careful... Same with the left front at Mid-Ohio.
The Glen or VIR? Not so much.

And also agree about WGI--with stock suspension settings I still get wear but nothing like it was prior to the repave

And the left rear ain't so great either, but it'll fly for a day with Chin @ Mid-O....right rear not bad, as I was told by two drivers behind me that it's off the ground going through the Glen's outer loop
