In my opinion there is not much of a difference between racing and DE which warrants dispensing with safety equipment. I've seen just as much $hit go down at DE events as I have at race weekends.
Accordingly, don't stop with the gloves! If someone gives you $hit for wearing a race suit at a DE event they are an idiot.

Gloves and a suede/alcantara wheel are the best combo of all. Superior grip without having to hang on hard and no sweaty hands. I resisted gloves for a good while but once I started racing it was mandatory. Once I tried it a few times I decided I liked it much more than bare hands. Is also helps in the colder months when giving points -by's which as Tremper says, adds to the visibility of the hand.
Without gloves I'd change the steering wheel for std leather as I don't feel grip adhesion with bare hand on alcantara (which would led me to grip tighter..}

Thanks for the input guys. Our DE days are small, as is our track (top speed around 100 mph, pretty much all 3rd gear). Not too much opportunity to try gear unfortunately. I might try one of my lighter MC gloves, to see about the feel on the wheel (which is my big concern). I'm not a death grip kind of guy and didn't have any serious issues with sweat last year, just thinking I could improve feel.

I wear them when it is cold. Otherwise, I loose a little bit of feel on the wheel. I do think that they add an element of safety, although I've never seen anyone benefit from a safety perspective by wearing gloves in a DE.
I have Sparco gloves that have a very grippy synthetic surface.

I would suggest buying them when you are able to try a bunch of different gloves on. Good fit is the key to liking them.
