Default Race seats: optimal balance of safety, comfort, and price for DE & Club Racing

Realizing that there isn't a single right answer to this and a matter of perspective what one considers safe, comfortable, and affordable, curious to hear different thought processes that resulted in your ultimate seat choice (or the next one you are considering).

My key considerations for next seat are halo support, relatively comfortable (i.e. I don't want the seat to be flat out uncomfortable but not looking for a massaging recliner either), and under $1000.

Personally, I'm having a hard time discerning between options like a Kirkey full containment (under $600), and a slew of Sparco, Momo, and OMPs in $650-1000 range.

Would love to hear how you arrived at your choice, and if you have any thoughts on my considerations.

Let's discuss

I went to a local shop (Stable Energies) and sat in each seat with my helmet and hans and picked the one that fit me best. To a large extend, you want the right seat width to hold you correctly. Everything else can be somewhat customized with moving the inserts around or buying other inserts.

Keep in mind that installation in your car is key. You want the right recline and the correct angles for your belts.

Ditto
Went to the same place and went through the same process with a buddy of mine and we ended up with very different seats as we both elected for best fit and haven't regretted it since.
Go for best fit and what feels comfortable. It will pay off in the long run irrespective of the price tag. You don't want a seat that you "feel".

I went Sparco Ergo and am happy! Just one data point. I know of someone selling a brand new Sparco Circuit for a good deal if you are on the skinnier side, just send me a PM if so.

Good luck with your decision!

If you are on the larger side (height or width) check out racetech, they actually have human sized seats and even have big and tall versions. I'm 6'4" and seemed to me all of momo, sparco, omp seats that I tried were sized for jockeys.

Thanks for all the input - I'm average build (6 foot / 180lbs), so should be able to fit in a range of things. One of the issues is that I don't have a speed shop with a wide range of seats anywhere close, but I'm thinking I could politely ask a few people to plant my butt into a few of their seats at the next DE

Can anyone comment on what separates a $600 Kirkey full containment, $800-1000 Sparco/Momo/OMP, and some of the higher end $2,000-3,000 seats? Is it purely comfort and weight differences, or are there any safety considerations I'm missing?

I should have mentioned I currently have a Sparco Pro 2000, which I'm fine with, but want to get halo system on my next seat...

As a datapoint, I got 2 used seats off the net. Used cobra Suzuka and another cobra... Name escapes me...

Love the Suzuka, form fitting, comfy...

The kirkeys look like they would be less comfortable...

All data points helpful, thx for sharing.

One question still lingering that I don't feel Im clear on is if the difference between an $800 and $2500 seat (or in extreme case, a $12,000 one)...

Based on the responses, seems like it's a combo of comfort / weight / fit, but no real difference in safety... am I missing anything?

cheers

Weight/materials and certification are the biggies in price. Are the lower end kirkey SFI or FIA certified? Most groups will require this. Kirkey are very popular with sprint cars (co worker races and uses them, and having seen the hits he's taken they are good seats).

Comfort is the biggie though. I like recaro. Some like race tech, etc.

Best idea is go to a track day, sit in some seats. Try them all out.

Be aware of the halo on your seat, do not get one that is so large that it will affect your egress from the car or your peripheral vision.

Thx both, and yes, great point on halos given it's going into a caged 951 that's already somewhat tight.

Beyone egress, the best idea to ensure decent peripheral vision feels like sitting in the seat and seeing how the halo fits with my eye level, etc

net, for anyone that's attending same DEs in the upcoming year, watch out as I'll be trying to get my butt into your seat
