Split starts for 944s (or other large classes)

Split starts are great because you avoid similar laptime cars starting next to each other that have completely different sector times. You just end up slowing each other down.
Split starts are a pain when there are problems with the Timing and Scoring System and Time Sheets come out late. It can get real messy on grid, especially when people show up late.....

No - with 30 SPBs you should get a split start. If you engage with the Lead Steward for a articular race EARLY, this is easily coordinated.

But 944 cup has an agreement with PCA that they get split starts if they have 15 or more cars. There is no such rule for classes within PCA. The Chief Stewart at a given race may or may not accommodate such a request but there is no rule that guarantees it at the moment.

Correct Van. And this number has evolved over time.
The 944 Cup classes were first added to the PCA club racing program in 2006, at which time the 944 Cup was running primarily with NASA. In 2009, the series began a swing to PCA when the 944 splits starts were introduced with a minimum of 10 cars for sprint races only. That was later bumped up to 15 when the series made a full migration to PCA in 2012. The number went to 18 this year and continues to apply only to sprint races. Splits are not offered for Enduros.

SPB racer. I agree with C4 Pazzo's comments. We'd much rather prefer split starts for the SPB group, and any SP1-3 who want to join us. A few years ago we were able to divide our race pack into three groups: 1)Zoomies, 2)SP911s, and 3)SPB/944 (not many 944s out here). Made for some great starts among like-timed cars. Seems PCA is frowning on this now for all but 944Cup, so we've had to adjust. We always ask the steward first for split starts. If that doesn't work, we work it out amongst ourselves, and our 944 friends, to ensure we have a safe, self-managed split start. Good stuff.
