Peter - what do you recommend in terms of a permanent power cable? Would the Solo DL power cable work? Also, what are the benefits of attaching the external GPS module?

I only have a nonDL Solo though, so would have to be separate.
EDIT: I'm guessing an external antenna allows you to put the SC on the rollbar. Otherwise would have to be on the windshield for good reception?

The dedicated and proper power cable for the SmartyCam is purpose built. You cannot use the seven pin power/CAN cable for the Solo DL for the SmartyCam because it needs a diode in it to prevent power feeding back from the SC battery. I have them in stock $49.
An alternative many folks have done is to use an RPM Bridge ($210) to supply switched power and RPM from a conventional ignition system to the camera.
Some of the SC, later revision (W.09 or W.10), do not have an internal GPS antenna, so they have to have an external antenna, which were shipped with the cameras. Unless the ones that have the internal antenna are placed inside the windshield with a clear view of the sky, you will need an external antenna, and the current antennas work with the old SC's.

For someone like you, I would suggest selling your Solo and picking up a DL. You'll spend $149 (edit: Corrected price from $299) on the GPS antenna and have two separate systems. If you sell your Solo for $300 (which should be pretty easy), you'll then spend the same amount to end up with a DL with one cable to the SC and another to the car for power/data.

Mine will be in a SPB.

The GPS-08B antenna needed for ANY of the SmartyCams, old or new, is $149, not the $299 for GPS-08 for the display loggers. You should know this...
You get THE SAME INFO, including the GPS info and measures, from the original SmartyCams that you do from the Solo, so both are redundant.
If you have an older car (pre-2002 Porsche), you'll receive NO more data with the Solo DL than you do from the Solo. There is no way to connect the camera to a Solo.
If you have a newer car, you'll receive more data AND send power and GPS information to the SmartyCam from the Solo DL, but the Solo DL will need at least switched power from the car.

Getting confused here. I thought the whole point of getting the old nonHD SC was becsuse it has its own internal gps and can be run by itself for video + data -- doesn't need the solo's gps. I only need the solo for the predictive lap timer -- happy to leave the data/video to the SC even if not connected to the solo. Both of the OP cameras were version W.06, btw.
I would expect you to be able to fire up the SmartyCam and once booted up, see the words "iGPS" (internal GPS) with a satellite count and a bar graph showing satellites show up on the preview screen. In which case, you can stick it up inside the windshield with a clear view of the sky above it and likely have NO problems. Mounting on the roll bar under a metal roof may or may not work.
If you fire it up and you see "No eGPS connected" then you need to buy an antenna, a GPS-08B for $149, and then you can put the camera anywhere in the car you want and be ok, as long as the antenna is on the roof or under the windscreen.
I think the camera will work perfectly for you use. First, mount the camera, then go to Menu>Settings>Accel Cal>Sel and center the ball in the friction circle. As long as you DON'T move the cameras position relative to the car, you're set.
Then, at the end of the run, pull the microSD card, put it in your computer, open Race Studio 2 and select "Download microSD data from SmartyCam" and it will pull ALL the internal data (including GPS info and measures) AND the corresponding video from that run and put it in your C:/AIM/RaceStudio2/DATA folder. Simple and easy.
