Can it be set to start/stop recording with the car's power on/of if plugged into the car's power socket? Does it have a cycle mode where it continuously overwrites the same memory? What's the diff vs Prime X?

Does the g-sensor get triggered by hard braking/cornering during a race so it hard-records everything, or maybe this doesn't matter since you can fit the whole weekend on a single card?

Thx for the suggestion!
For your stated purposes (cheap camera to meet PCA requirements for your SPB) this is exactly the option I chose (auto-vox $64 dash cam from amazon)

I have four of these cameras. Three in my street cars (running constantly for 2 years.. nice to be able to keep an eye on the wife's driving once in a while ) and one in my spec boxster (which has been on my windshield for two years). I've never had any failures in any of them. I never touch them... just pop out the SD card once in a while. On the street cars, I have the g-sensors on. In the race car, I have them turned off. a 64 gB card will record the entire race weekend. I never touch it, unless there's an incident.

In truth, it takes pretty decent 1080p video. This is just an example (nothing exciting, just a random 5 min file from the start of the WGI race last year).

it isn't for data analysis or "look at what a fast chap I am" rennlist posts. It's there simply as a mechanism to guarantee that if there's an incident, I have it recorded. it's literally always running. On the SD card, it dumps short video files about 3-5 minutes in length (you specify in the settings). each is date/time stamped for easy access. If there's an incident (from the g-sensor) or you punch the center button (e.g. I pass someone and want to gloat later), it dumps that particular video file into a special folder that does not get overridden.

trying to manipulate a 30 min video file is a PITA. these 5 min files are small, and you can transfer them quickly in case a steward wants to take a peek at let's say lap 9 of Saturday's race. The files are time-stamped.

Yes. Yes. PrimeX has wireless app, bigger body and is current.

Good deal. I bought a used nonHD smartycam the other day for $250 -- to combine video + data in a simple standalone unit. Hopefully it has the internal gps antenna. Already have a Solo for real-time predictive lap timing.
