Default Watkins Glen - New surface and tire wear

Gents, curious to get some feedback from those who have been on the new surface to know what to expect for tire wear when I'm there. My home track is probably the easiest on tires of anyplace I've ever run and I want to insure that if the new surface is a tire shredder that I come prepared.

Thanks,
Andy

Default Watkins Glen - New surface and tire wear

Very easy. Our daytona prototype at the IMSA race there a few weeks ago could have easily double stinted the tires- very little wear

My LF took a bit of a beating probably due to trail braking 1 and 8. The rest look good and if I switch the fronts side to side definitely have another 3 days life.

I have found it to be a bit setup dependent. I've seen some badly grained, worn tires come off the new surface from decent setups, but I have also seen tires that look perfect with little wear.

I ran three sets of Pirelli Hoosier slicks at WGI recently over 5 days and they all showed extremely little wear.

Interesting. I've only driven the new pavement for two days in my Formula Mazda running "soft" compound GY 255 slicks. I had significantly accelerated wear compared to the older surface in comparable conditions at all four corners.

I think you can blame that on the meat cakes from the Seneca!

In truth I felt like there was slightly less wear on the tires. Maybe since the track is now consistently one surface you don't have tires jumping from concrete to pavement and back and that contributes to it.

I also got a bunch of chirping in my tires under heavy braking, especially at turn 1.

Where was the wear? Too much camber now and you'll kill the insides. Any photos? Graining?

Fairly significant graining. Shouldering on the inside of the driver side front and rear which is typical on a FM (runs + camber in rear). There was a toe problem in the rear which did alleviate things a bit but overall the tires were shredded at an accelerated rate. I would say that the wear pattern is what is normal for my car but it just happened very quickly. For me a 'medium' compound for WGI would be better now but unfortunately GY stopped making it.

Another difference was that I finally got my front wing in shape and was able to actually run some downforce with it. We backed some of the wing out and that improved the wear on the 2nd set of tires.

I'll be back there in September and everything will probably be different!

My experience, both.
