Default Snell and PCA DE.

Tried searching a bit but not working so much on my mobile. Will Snell 2005 still work for 2016 PCA DE, or time to upgrade?

Some regions may give a grace period, as many of the 2015 helmets are not readily available yet, but generally yes.

The general rule for DE is current and prior Snell certification only. So 2010 and 2015 are in compliance.

Here in Texas, all 2005 helmets are good until March, I believe.

The PCA Driver Education Minimum Standards, refer to the club racing rules...

PCA 2016 club racing rules, PCA CLUB RACING SAFETY, Driver requirements:

6. Helmets must be certified in accordance with one of the following standards: Snell SA2010 or SAH2010, Snell SA2015 or SAH2015, FIA8860-2004 or 2010, SFI 31.1, or BS6658-85 type A/FR. Helmets certified to specifications other than Snell must be within 10 years of the date of manufacture. Snell SA2005 may continue in use until June 1, 2016. Helmets must have the driver’s name on the rear and have the approved PCA Club Racing Inspection sticker displayed on the left side. It is recommended that helmets be replaced or relined after 5 years of actual use.

Here is the DE Standard:
Clothing

All car occupants must wear a Snell approved helmet, which has the current available Snell rating or the one previous Snell rating. Other helmets are acceptable if they are approved for PCA Club Racing. Footwear must be enclosed, non-slip, with a relatively smooth sole. Hiking type deep lugged soles are not acceptable.

Most organizations allow a 1-year grace period between Snell standards. So, many clubs/organizations will allow a Snell SA2005 through 2016, but no-go for 2017. It is best to ask the club/organization with which you intend to participate.

NASA just sent me an email - not that I run with them..

"An early reminder to current NASA racers and TT drivers- RENEW your licenses for 2016. Make sure your medical forms are current.
Our first 2016 Competition School will be Friday, April 15
at NJMP.

SPECIAL NOTE: The use of SA-2005 helmets has been extended through the 2016 season. "

Here's a related (but not exactly to the point question)-

How much of a discount would one want to get on an SA-2010 helmet since the SA-2015 is already in release?

The reason I ask is that I bought an SA-2010 three years ago; only got to use it once for a DE (life happened); and, now, due to medical reasons, won't be able to do auto sports. It's kind of a waste to keep it if I can't use it.

Effective June 01, 2016 PCA will accept 2015 and 2010 Snell rated helmets with the 2005 and prior not acceptable. Extra time due to later availability
