Anyone know why this thing is 4 terminals instead of 2?

Wild guess: Could it be to ground out the alternator to ensure the electrics get killed if the engine is running?

Depends on whether the second set of terminals opens or closes when you open the switch. If they open when you open the switch, then it's for a car with a separate regulator from the alternator, and you interrupt the field current from the regulator to the alternator. If they close when you open the switch, then it's like Mike said above, you send the alternator output through a resistor to ground.

You need to protect the alternator when power is removed or you could damage it. See here:
