Next Generation Hoosier R3S04
The replacement for our Hoosier DOT's are being slowly released according to Grassroots magazine. They actually have a photo of the new tire. Hoosiers web site has a release announcement but no hard data or photos. Anyone have the weight or other comparrisons to the S03 models? I called Uncle Bob's shop and it will be '04 before we see them in 18".
The ad says "increased cornering speeds and longer wear". Isn't that an oxymoron? Soft=grip=speed=fast wear.

I saw a tire at the Road America club race (15") It looks much like the F1 tires. They were handing out cut sheets on the tires. An blurb from the sheet " Testing has revealed a substantial improvement in consistency, fall off and wear. The improvements were achieved using a newly engineered construction and process technique. The tread design features a "slick" tread surface with Formula One type tread grooves. The sidewalls feature a new graphic and will include a "rim recess" design in all bead sies, 13-18"
Our development has yielded better turn in response, increase in lateral forces and cornering speeds, resulting in lap times .6 to .8 secs per lap faster than the existion A3S03 and R3S03 models."
Price for 18's 245/35 246.00 275/35 252.00 285/30 (yes 30) 269.00 305/30 279.00 and 335/30 307.00
I think they will be aval early 04.

It's good to see some market competition improving the breeds of competition tires.

Eric, That is good info. Glad to see the prices are close to the old design.
Jack, No doubt the Michelin PSC tires got Hoosiers attention but they are considerably slower than the same car/driver/conditions on Hoosiers. For De and keeping the cost down, a little road use, the Michelins are a good choice.

I saw the new tire and it looks really cool. Sent them an email yesterday about my particular sizes and will let you guys know when I get a response.
Re: MPSC's, are not near as fast as Hoosier's. I knocked 2 seconds off my time at my home track (1.8miles) after changing from Michelins to Hoosiers (no other change).
And I think the Michelin's are not as consistent and are hard to get the power down compared to the Hoosiers. By consistent I don't mean lap time but feel. Some turns they slide and you just go with it. Next time they slide and if you don't correct you are gone. Not too mention the issues I had with them in relatively cool weather (40-50 degrees). Guys that have used them may know what I mean. Also found a lot of understeer in entrance to slow corners and then oversteer on the exit. The MPSC's were very good on fast corners though.

I've never run the Sport Cups. But from what I understand, you'll be very disappointed if you simply swap them out on a car that's been set up for Hoosiers. I'm told they require different suspension settings, and a little tuning. They're still not supposed to be ultimately as the the Hoosiers, but can get within a half second or so at most tracks.
But take that with a grain of salt. As I've never run them -- I can't get them in my sizes.

Can anyone post a picture of the tread?
My current classification rules do not allow the R3SO3 models because they are essentially slicks, but if they have the zig-zag groove similar to the Hoosier bias-ply's, I could use them!

The tread looks just like the old Hoosiers, no zig zag. Any more racing for you this season??

I'm glad to see everyone finally came around with me on the hoosier vs MPSC debate. One place where the MPSC does much better than the hoosier is on a damp/wet track though

I would be very afraid of the MPSC's on a cool damp track though. I did some rain laps at my local track and the grooved Hoosiers (which are hopefully going to be as good as the new DOT rain tire) where much, much better.
