Default Blown sidewall on Hoosier R7

My 245/35/18 R7 front tire blow the sidewall today. Luckily I noticed the vibration and came in.

I have actually had good experiences dealing with Hoosier on tire defects. They may want it for analysis. Contact your supplier, what can it hurt?

This set is about cycled out anyhow and I already have a new set to be mounted. Would be interesting to see however if this is a week spot of the R7 in which case what tire would be an alternative?

PM sent.

Was this tire only mounted once? Meaning was it taken off and put back on at any point in time? I have had a couple of issues with R6s after they had been run and taken off and then remounted. I have stopped using any take offs and not had any problems with new tires even when I run them to the cord.

Thanks for the PM Texas. To answer your question, these were new tires and have 15 heat cycles on them as this tirewall blew. This morning I started at 27psi whereas I normally start at 29psi. I cannot remember ever having hit anything with the tire other than rumble strips. I never had a blow out on any of my R6s.

What hot pressure do you typically see? Did the blowout occur in the first few laps or had you already gotten the tires up to pressure?

Tires were back up at hot pressure - 33psi front and 35 psi rear

So it doesn't sound like it was a low pressure issue.....

It wouldn't appear so. Could be an anomaly but I'm glad I decided vibration was more than just rubber pick up and that I was close to pit in area.

I would not rule out a low pressure issue. The R7s are designed to be run at higher pressures than the R6s. I used to run the R6 at about 35 and am now running the R7 at about 40. One of our guys called Hoosier and was told they should never be run below 34 or you risk damaging the tire. Our cars may be a little heavier, but this should give you an idea.

I'll experiment with higher pressures on my new set, maybe 35 front and 36 rear.

Had the same thing happen to me at LRP in March. With mine I think the cold was a factor.

To clarify, we were told not to run them lower than 34 COLD. Your car may be lighter and ok with lower pressures, but I would highly recommend calling Hoosier. It only costs a phone call and may save you some time/money experimenting with the tires.

Got it - thanks for your advice. I will call them for sure.
