HANS device selection help

Hi Mike
Not to be the nanny here, but I'd encourage you (and others) to avoid the 'someday' trap if possible when it comes to safety equipment.
The first thing the rescue crew said to me (after the initial check) was how glad they were to see I had good safety equipment. And how surprised they are when drivers don't have a HANS.
I wonder what they say when it's a bad wreck?

This is wise advice. I read your thread about your encounter and learned 2 things. 1. You were smart and had track insurance. 2. You were really smart and had the right safety gear.
I just put in my fixed back seats/6 points I need to get a HANS this weekend.

Thanks for all the input. It sounds like I should just get the best device that works in my own car and not based it on dual use in my car and student cars.
Is the R3 a hybrid style similar to the simpson hybrid?
If I go with a true HANS style how do you guys choose one? There are so many options/styles/price points.

The R3 has a longer part that goes down the back. It's the one that didn't have to attach to seatbelt or anything so it 'anecdotally' was for 3 pt setups as well. I've tried pretty much every single head restraint and they all 'disappear' when I'm on track. So that shoudlnt' be an issue.
When I had most of them on the shelf I regularly went with the Hybrid Pro. Now I only have the Hybrid Pro.

I understand the "someday" trap, but that isn't really what's going on here. I don't have any reason to think the R3 isn't as safe as a Hans with 5/6 pt belts. I want to get a Hans just because it appears easier to put on.
The R3 had a chest strap and belt guides for shoulder harnesses. It is very similar to the hybrid, but it does not have straps the go down to the lap belts.
I bought the R3 specifically because it would give me Hans level of protection with 5/6 point belts and possibly some protection in student's cars.

I'm not recommending or encouraging which safety devices or strategies to use, only to think about the implications of waiting until someday.
You're doing the right thing by investigating and acting promptly.

Understood and apologies if I took your original request off its original intent.

I do recall being thankful I had the R3 on when I was off track and nearly barreled head first into a corner station. Thankfully I was able to thread the needle and not test the R3's capabilities.
Even more thankful now that I've upgraded to a fully caged car.

I used to spend all my money on parts to go faster. One day I ran into the marbles of the downhill at Lime Rock and by the grace of God managed to pull it out. It would have been a hard hit and it scared the $hit out of me. Last run of the day (of course) with about 15 minutes left in the session. I pulled off and put the car on the trailer. Sometimes you have to know when you are done for the day.
Bought a HANS device that night and soon after got a HALO seat for side impacts. It was also a factor in going from my 944 to the Cayman - newer safety technology.
All this safety equipment will be cheap compared to the loss of earning and rehab costs.
