Default Denise McCluggage: 1927-2015

I've never heard of her, but it sounds like she had an interesting life and was doing female racing "firsts" over 50 years ago.

Link.

RIP

Denise at Sebring in '65. I think she drove the Ferrari California at Sebring that later appeared in the Steve McQueen "Thomas Crown Affair" movie.

Very well-known driver and later journalist--she lived a very long and fruitful life.

She was an Autoweek columnist, and funny, long before Al Gore invented the internet.

Great story teller (in AW) and a pioneer sports car driver. But all accounts, a life well lived. God speed.

She raced and won against the top talent of the day. She won the GT class in a 250 GT SWB at Sebring in 1961, 2nd in GT at Sebring in 1967 among other notable performances.

Above all, she was a gifted writer, speaker and an eloquent champion of a variety of viewpoints, racing related or not. She will be missed.

I bought one of her photos at the Radnor Hunt car show a few years ago and met her then. Great close up of Jim Clark in Formula One. Very classy and unassuming lady.

She was fantastic, a great loss, an American racing hero.

Everything she wrote, and she was writing right up until the end, was worthwhile. She owned many of the great cars she campaigned, including IIRC a 275GTB NART Syder. Someone once said to her, 'if you still owned all the cars you once raced, you'd be rich,' and she replied, 'if I were rich I wouldn't have had to sell the cars I once had...'

She was way ahead of her time and if I'm not mistaken not only wrote for Autoweek but also founded the magazine.
