The Lost Art of Smoking while Driving
#16
The legendary Dick Trickle apparently considered Fangio to be his mentor. At least as far as smoking while driving was concerned.

Fangio made his bones racing hot-rod fords in Argentina, and made it to F1 and LeMans in his thirties. That's talent, and *****.
Today, if daddy doesn't invest $250K in your karting career by the time you are 16, and you don't have a multi-national bank (conveniently owned by your uncle) sponsoring you, you're meat.

Funny story about smoking...
In 2004 I paid for an Audi Club trip to Barcelona to drive on Circuit de Catalunya. The 2004 RS4 had just come out, and I wanted to check it out bad. My wife and I made a trip of it. It was fun as hell.
One of the drills we did was lead-follow. We would pair up with another driver, and follow the instructor around the track. The instructor would have a hand-held radio, and so would each driver pair. He would call back instructions like 'too early', 'a little later', etc. We where impressed he could drive so damn fast (to us it was fast) look in the mirror at us, and use the radio all at once.
On this particular day I was paired up with Terry Geiser. He's a awesome dude who frequents HOD events in Norcal. Anyways, him and I where in the car, and he was driving. At one point we see the instructor doing what appears to be a lame point by, like, his hand is moving out the window. Like a flicking motion. See where I am going?
He was driving what felt like 10/10ths to us, speaking to us on the radio, shifting, driving, looking in the mirror and yes, flicking a cig out the window. The dude was smoking while hauling *** around the track in an RS4.
When we asked him about it later, he simply said, Smoking is bad for your health.
LOL.
