Default Locating an external 3.5mm mic?

Just curious if anyone is using a remote mic for their video and if so, where do you put it to get max exhaust noise with minimal wind noise? Also would like suggestions on what mic to get.. My car is fairly quiet inside and I think the wind noise with windows down may drown out what little engine sound I get..

This question is asked a lot, and I don't think I've seen a definitive answer yet. Some folks mount them near the exhaust tip but heat and wind might be a problem. Which car is this for? The Boxster? As for microphones, the I/O-Port mic has worked well for me.

I used a cheap plastic computer mic I had lying around. wrapped some foam around it and taped it to the center tunnel. Sounds pretty good, cut down on the wind noise a lot.

Use one of the rear license plate bolts. Worked well for me.

I actually just grabbed a pair of ear bud style headphones I had laying around. Tucked it under the flap of the carpet in the rear.

Be for the STi Rick. I actually have a couple choices for placement, outside by the licence plate or I may try near the "sound tube" they pipe engine noise into the cabin with if I can figure it out. Couldn't find an IOPort Mic anywhere...

Hi Gary
I don't have a suggestion for location in an STI, but here is a link to the microphone; http://www.ioportracing.com/Merchant...Category_Code=
$10 plus shipping
Hope this helps

Panasonic makes some small lapel microphone with wind sack. I just have to remember where I got them. I think I got them through Chase Cam orginally. The link above looks ok. You just need to position out of any wind. Radio Shack probably has one.

Just get one of those "coffee can" mufflers all the kids use on their STI. You can locate the mic anywhere and still hear it!

The technical term is "Farty-Can" and I already have a 6" straight pipe from a big Cat diesel. My biggest issue now is getting my helmet to fit over my backwards baseball hat...
