Question New NT-01s as rain tires?

So weather this weekend for COTA is looking like crap and I've got a new to me race car that isn't really setup for street tires which is what I normally use to DE in the wet.

I do have a brand new set of NT-01s and I've got time to get them mounted. How would they be in the wet?

I'm not racing, just doing the DE.

Luckily, there's not much to hit at COTA.

They come with 6/32 of tread...they should be fine in light to moderate rain. If you have never driven in the wet before, it can be real fun.

Well, yeah, compared to Watkins Glenn. Runout at COTA in all the "opps" locations is actually pretty good.

I have lots of experience in the wet, even at COTA where it was okay in a downpour on NT05s, which are terrible rain tires. I won't go out in a downpour on these.

Maybe I will get lucky and the weather forecast will be just as accurate as it was for TWS last weekend, which for the most part, was not partly cloudy and 70 degrees.

Default I like rain racing / driving.....

But not on a slick which I feel the NT01 might as well be. A full tread RA1 would be better.
I'd weigh the option of not driving if it's raining TOO much or if there are too many other non aware idiots going out.
Just remember the risk vs reward.
Also remember that "the line" in the rain is NOT "the line" in the dry.

At COTA wet and dry lines are pretty much the same...except for curb/rumble strip usage

I found braking zone into 20 at COTA very slick in the wet but everything else was same. My ABS would go crazy, so had to brake off line. Traction was really great everywhere else considering the conditions.

I've run NT01 in wet but not raining conditions, they were OK, but MPSS felt better.

I would respectfully disagree VR, although I still have not driven the track personally to judge. Watching the WC racers in the rain a week+ ago it seemed the faster rain guys were definitely on a different line than when they were when it was dry. Different car setup alone would dictate a different line. Not to mention the track dynamics of where the previous rubber, oil and marbles have been laid down to determine the best place to drive.

Plus it would be the only track I have heard EVER that maintains the same line wet or dry. You might want to watch some of the WC race on video, watch the McLaren that won in particular. And maybe play around with it yourself this weekend and let us know if your opinion changes or not.

Interesting, as RS3s don't have a particularly good reputation in the wet. I went through a set on my last car and never got to try them on the track wet, but I liked them in the dry.

Were the NT-01s at NJMS brand new? The ones I had mounted today have 0 miles on them.

I think everybody here will take VR's take instead of yours. He knows, you don't. Thats like an arm chairs quarterback second guessing the loosing coaches superbowl decision on the "virtual" last play.

I've run RS3s and NT01s in the rain on my Audi. Different tracks but both sets were worn a bit as I remember. The RS3s were at Atlanta Motorsports Park in a FLOOD and were ok. The NT01s were at Road Atlanta and they were a handful. That day I pulled them and put my street tires (Conti DW) on and they were AWESOME. Like passing everybody with a little Audi TT awesome :-) Rain is fun in the Cayman but it was a blast in the Audi.
