My E53 experience is with 4.6i gas V8. Plenty of power for towing. Check out xOutpost for E53 diesel opinions, but recall it reduced tow capacity from gas V8s. Assume OP was looking at F15 or last of the E70, since going off lease was catalyst. 400+ torque on diesel (E70 or F15) seem enough grunt to tow max load. And then there is the Porsche Cayenne Diesel

For towing, even with a little SUV like the X5, diesel will certainly be nicer.
But I don't know your wife. Keep in mind diesel is harder to find - she'll have to remember that when driving it daily. Make sure she doesn't accidentally fill it with gasoline, may have to plan her fuel stops based on where she KNOWS there is diesel available, etc. Those reasons are the big reason why I didn't consider a diesel for my wife. She likes to run the car down to fumes, then start looking for a gas station. Can't do that with a diesel since it's not sold on every corner here like gasoline is.

Go for the diesel. I had a 2012 X5d that I used to tow. It was great. Much better for towing than the gas model (which I had way back in 2004). Torque is great. I think the 2015 model is superb with the new transmission and I think they have a new engine, or maybe a revised one (compared to the 2012).
I just went through this entire process and ended up with the Q7d. I think it's a better choice, especially given the 6600 towing capacity (+10% over the X5). I drove the Q7 (not towing) for a 600 mile round trip and got 29.4 MPG. I typically go over 500 miles on a tank in normal work driving mode.
I use/d the Tekonsha wireless controller for both.
Happy to answer any Q's I can.

In comparison, pricing for the F15 invisihitch will be announced when the hitch is released (estimated to be just before Thanksgiving), but we have previously committed that the F15 invisihitch will be priced at the same or lower price as the previous generation invisihitch for the E70 X5. So the maximum price of the high-end invisihitch package (for both towing and attaching racks) would be $998. Actual pricing may be lower when announced. And the towing capacity of the invisihitch supports the full 7,700 lb tow rating of the new X5.

Checkout the GL Diesel. Wife loves it for kids carpool and because she only needs to fill it every 3 weeks, ~ 600 miles. It holds 26.5 gallons and even towing an open trailer (968 in my case) will get close to 20mpg. We have 75K on ours, no issues. Diesel it not hard to find, but pricing can vary massively. If they called it the GL 650, MB would sell more diesels

X5 US Spec has 6k tow rating from bmw, same car in europe has 7700b tow rating. Invisihitch states their hitch is good up to 7700lbs. Talk to any dealer in the US and you'll see spec listed for x5 at 6k regardless of hitch. Not sure why... ??? Liability?

I don't think you want to tow a pound over the spec'ed tow weight on the car for liability reasons. Although that is my common sense and not fact based. Can anyone chime in there?

My Loaded trailer and gear doesn't come close to 6000 lbs let alone 7700 so not a problem either way.

Gor for the diesel............I use the Q7 TDI. I'm on my 3rd one and won't go back.
Much better mileage than my petrol friends ( 16-18 towing heavy 996 TT).
Also, can't beat the torque for uphill pulls.
Everyday mileage is much better as well

I'm very happy with my X5 4.8i for towing my 17" open Featherlite. I thought about the diesel but the gas version is more than enough for my towing needs and it's an excellent DD too.

I got 9.8 on my X5m coming back from College station to Austin, with a row of 7 tires....up high - worst aero case I have with the trailer. Not great gas mileage, but it will do 0-60 in 3.7secs (tune) and lap TWS around 2min on street tires.

Thanks for trying to let me drive it over the weekend. My weekend, as you know, was very hectic. The X5d is on my short list. I like the size, enough for towing, but small enough to be easier to handle and park around town.
