Need recommendations on first HANS-type device
Gents,
Trying to do my due diligence researching these things before pulling the trigger. Figured I'd get some opinions from you guys since there seems to be a few different designs available (necksgen/simpson/HANS), and the reviews I've been reading online (saferacer) haven't been much help because every situation seems to be different based upon seats/etc.
Here's my setup: Miata with Sparco Sprint V seats and Crow FIA Cam-lock harnesses (non halo.)
Usage: HPDE's in NASA group 3/4, then NASA TT when I have my comp license (hopefully mid 2015.)
Budget: My old lady is gonna kick in $600 for my Xmas present this year and I'm willing to add to that if it makes sense.
Thanks for the advice in advance.

I have a HANS which I started using this year. When I am on the track I don't even realize I have it. Only time I am aware of it is when I am backing out and can't turn my head.
I feel safer because I have it.

I like my hans sport II. Also be sure to carefully read the set up dimensions- angle of the belts, distance from shoulder to attachment points and distance between the belts at the attachment points. These need to be in the right positions for the hans to work correctly. Of course you should have a SAH helmet with the anchors to attach the tethers. Good choice to get a head and neck restraint device.

Thanks guys. Any discernible difference in function/comfort between the regular HANS sport and the Pro models? Just trying to decide whether it makes sense to spend the extra cheese.

The Pro is lighter, but IMHO once the harnesses are tight over your shouldets, you won't notice the difference. Save a little dough. 😃

I've got a Simpson R3 that I use for myself and instruction. It's okay, but I believe the Hans allows more left and right movement and I don't like that I have to put my helmet on outside the car. The R3 is supposed to provide some protection in 3 point belts, hence the attraction for instructor use.
If this is for yourself, and you will always have 5/6 point belts, I agree with others, just get the Hans.
Sparco Ergos are an alternative for halos on a street driven car. I find that I really only have to remove the drivers side right halo on the street, I leave the other 3 attached all the time. Depending on how you fit in the halo seat, it may actually be streetable. The issue will be the left and right blind spot. During the day, I can drive it on the street with the right halo installed, I just have to rotate my head a bit to check the right blind spot. The problem is at night. Black interior, black seat, and dim light it is easy to forget just how to look. After inadvertently cutting off a few cars at night, SOP became removing the driver's seat right side halo for street use.
