BMW M4 vs 991 Carrera track battle
#5
1 mid engine
2 rear engine
3 front engine
1 gazillion $
2 $110K
3 $75K
Saprize, Saprize!
Be interested in a GTS Cayman at $75K, do a Z51 C7 Vette at $60K, and may I add a full bore V-8 2015 Mustang GT, at, maybe $40+K???
I'd say a lot of nuclear-grade hardware available at almost any price-point...
It's really a new golden age of performance cars.

So I'm not nuts--after track time in both, I think the DCT transmission in my 2011 M3 was more responsive and direct/positive-feeling than the PDK in my 991S. Looks like M. Franchitti agrees. I would assume the PDK-S in the GT3 is better.
Interesting how the chassis and layout of the 991 trumps the new M4 on the track, despite a significant power deficit. I assume the Carrera S would do even better.

The 911 is a sports car, in any guise, from base model to GT3. The M3 is a sports coupe, with a fantastic chassis, but it's no sport car.
No surprise on the outcome at the track. 911 is 400 lbs lighter as well.
The fat torque curve of the M3 makes is great for daily driving, but as you can see, makes it more tricky at the track, especially with BMW's notoriously sensitive throttle settings.
I simply have no desire to own the M4 simply because of the turbo engine...in fact, I literally just took delivery of my '13 M3 coupe. The S65 is a masterpiece of an engine, and I could car less if the new M4 is way faster. For the NA guy, the E92 M3 is about as good of a sports coupe as you can get, IMO.
