Do you mean 15" Marathons? If so the issue isn't the manufacturer, Maxxis or Goodyear are both reputable it's the nature of the 15" ST tire. I ran a set of Marathons of my Featherlite 3110 open for 2+ years without any issues. They're fine for light weight applications. They're just not built well enough to handle 8k + loads and the heat they generate. Those that haul often are mostly on 16" LT tires for a reason....

Default I'd like to switch to a US tire

My new trailer came with Westlake Trailer Tires, 235/80/16...10 ply I believe, run at 80 psi. I'd like to go over to Carlisle or another American made tire....I will when I get a little wear on the present tires.

When I ran 205/??/15s on my former 3000 Lb Hallmark trailer, I had several blow outs, one so destructive that I had to replace an axle. I have forgotten the brand name....I like the idea of a 16" wheel/tire combo...

jrgordonsenior,

What kind of tire was that with the bubble? I had one on my Maxxis, but that was on the one next to the total blow out, so I expect that it was overstressed and can understand that.

I'm looking for the best trailer tire too. I guess I'll have to go to 16".

Thanks for all of the info.

I am running 17" wheels on a 26-ft enclosed trailer. Total loaded trailer weight is between 8,000 and 9,000 lbs, depending on how it is loaded out.

Maxxis 225/75/15 10 ply E-load. They're the second set I've had delaminate on me....

Here's my tire & wheel quote from Damon at Tirerack: Damon (ext. 4643) at 888-727-8092 or damon@tirerack.com

4-16X6 ULTRA TYPE 62 TRAILER SDC wheels @ $ 96. = $ 384.

4- LT225/75R-16 BRIDGESTONE DURAVIS R500 HD E @ $160.11 = $ 640.44

Subtotal = $ 1,024.44

Shipping to Calif = $ 143.04

Grand total = $ 1,167.48

I lied they are 16-in wheels, they are Goodyear Marathons which is an ST.

Since you have 16" rims, I would skip the ST's and go with an LT tire.

Worth every penny. Do it and don't look back (literally)...there is no comparison.

I've been running 16" Goodyear Marathons for several years (and a couple of sets) without problems, but I have to say I like the specs on those Bridgestones.

Those Bridgestones are $$$. I just got 4 new Goodyear Marathon 235/80-16 E rated. Got them at Sam's Club. $120 plus tax each but a $60 instant rebate. About $450-460 out the door then took them to the place that does all my mounting and balancing and paid $40. So under $500 total. Saved the best one for a 2nd spare for long hauls.

The thing is for the extra $180 you will get 2 to 3 times the lifespan and eliminate the game of Russian roulette when a trailer tire pops. Put the two unmounted tires next to each other; there is no comparison for half the price of one R7....

My trailer and its content is $$$$$ compared to the "$$$" that the tires cost. Like I said, I've had no issues with the Goodyear Marathons, and with an open trailer I would probably continue down that route. But with an enclosed with ac, tools, compressor, generator, Nespresso machine, martini kit,... Not to mention race car... I'll probably go the Bridgestone route next time.

Just to add insult to injury the America's Tire store nearby apparently lost my wheel and tire I dropped off Tuesday. They ordered and received a replacement Maxxis tire so I can haul to Laguna this weekend while waiting for my 16" tire/wheel order but they can't find my aluminum 15" rim w/the delaminated tire. They think their recycler must have picked it up. Oh well, it's only Laguna Seca.....
