Formula 1 Sounds from Jerez today (1.28.2014)
So, those new V6s have been under a lot of criticism and bitching how bad they sound, of course before nobody heard them for real and not remembering how the V6s sounded in '80s.
Today, we heard for the first time and as usual, a lot of bitching for nothing. They don't sound bad at all. Not saying they're as cool as V8s, let alone V10s or better yet old Ferrari V12s were but still, not bad.
Here are few clips, remember most of them are not really on full song (especially Raikkonen who's coasting) since today everyone took it fairly easy and were just collecting preliminary data.
Anyway, judge yourself, below few youtube clips.

There is a big difference between "not bad" and "good"...

Plus the new cars look utterly stupid, in a 7th grade boy phallic sort of way.
Yuck.
Yuck.

Oh damn, I hadn't seen that one!! VR, why don't you send them a Texas size aero device for that car.... you know... the ones that you guys hang from the back of your pickup trucks in Texas.

As you know during wet track sessions, the rear light under the wing must blink on and off. This Texas "under tray" aero attachment hooked up and illuminated will do the trick.

Oh my god. I thought the Ferrari was bad those are the worst looking trolls I've seen in a long time. Getting hard to be excited about the way the car looks or sounds, I wonder if they can now make them smell bad too...

Maybe they can muffle the new engine and just pipe out some better sounds for the fans, kind of like some car manufacturers pipe in sounds to their production cars:-)
Agree that the sound is not horrible until you compare it to what it was 20 years ago though. Oh well, griping isn't going to make them sound better.

Then you probably haven't seen the Toro Rosso either...
McLaren is a masterpiece compared to Caterham & Toro Rosso.
Sauber is pretty good and Lotus definitely the most interesting concept with the two, different length noses.
As far the sound of an old Ferrari V12... Well, even V10s don't sound as good as the V12 did... Old Hockenheim, the first chicane in the forrest, 20+ cars screaming & approaching... Best soundtrack I've ever heard!

They sound pretty similar to the compact V8, twin-turbo days of CART. Maybe not quite as deep and a little more hissy. Not bad. Probably a lot better in person.
Those noses on the other hand....sheeeze
