I would like to even out my schedule for 2014 - do all the clubs post their schedules in January?

well that has been my problem even for PCA, no locked down dates. I at least need to set my work schedule like months in advance if possible

so once a schedule is posted I block out all the days for the year then register when it opens and book hotels etc at same time

Chump Car posts their schedule November 1, waaaaay before the various PCAs post their DE schedules. I'm one of the ones that has to put in a leave schedule NLT Dec 1, so next year Chump Car will be getting priority.

Tracks hand out dates in order of importance TO THEM. So, major pro events (Nascar, Tudor, World Challenge, etc) get the first picks, then other large paying groups (Lemons, Chump, etc), and then club events (SCCA, PCA, NASA, Chin, etc). In the North East, that means that clubs don't get their dates until December/January.

Most of our Midwest clubs (MOR, NOR, OVR, KY and Allagheny) have them posted somewhere between Jan and March. I usually map out the must-do events in March then play the others by ear.

Don't forget Audi club in July @ MO is fantastic and the SCCA PDX both Cinci and ohio valley run single day Friday events too.

I don't know if you're talking about racing or DE or open track events.
My company likes us to put in our vacay requests early. Like I already have my 2014 vacay weeks scheduled. There is some chance to change these but of course 'popular' weeks are difficult to get later on.
Most of the outfits I go with have their events in the same week each year and those are the weeks I request off. So, have a look at 2013 and plan accordingly.
As to when I actually 'book' dates, it is the moment the registration sites open for a given date. To me it's reminiscent of sneaking downstairs as a child at 04:00 to see what Santa left behind.
